Default 2018.7 better than 12.8.3 on a mac?

Thinking about upgrading from 12.8.3 to 2018.7 on my 2012 MacBook pro
I7 quad 2.7 16 gigs ram on Mac OS sierra 10.12.6...

Did you notice a performance boost when going to 2018.7 ?
Have you found that most of the plugins are compatible?

Id like to keep 12.8.3 on the same machine
Do I need to rename 12.8.3 to something else to keep it from being upgraded?

thanks!

I haven't noticed much of a performance boost with 2018.7 but it is very stable, although I am on High Sierra, not Sierra.
I guess stability is a kind of performance boost but maybe not the kind you were necessarily after.

I've had no problems with plug ins.

The Pro Tools app in your Applications folder will just be called "Pro Tools" unless you've renamed it.
If not then rename it "Pro Tools 12.8.3" and install 2018.7.
2018.7 will then be in your applications folder and will be called "Pro Tools".
It will then behave as usual when you use your chosen method to launch Pro Tools.

No noticeable performance change from 12.8, but stable and working fine.

Dunno about the wisdom of having both versions on your machine - if you're doing it because you're afraid of the upgrade then you should really have at least one bootable clone of your system drive (you should have that regardless).

Thanks for the help, be nice to try it out and not have to commit to it.

As long as both versions of Pro Tools are compatible with the macOS, there shouldn't be a problem. The only real issue would be HD Driver versions if you are using HD hardware. I use Pete Gates' PT Prefs program to backup my prefs, and I always make a redundant copy of a particular PT version's prefs when I co-install, so I don't have to rebuild prefs if I end up using the previous version. After that, it's just a matter of renaming the current PT version and installing the new one. For full disclosure, I always uninstall App Manager and Cloud Services right away after every install, so I can't speak to how those items might affect co-installs.
Of course, bootable clone OS backups are necessary and a good idea no matter what. I use Carbon Copy Cloner for this.

2018.7 on 10.12.6 is by far the best pro tools I have ever used in my entire life. I recommend it specifically FOR performance even if you don't need the new features. Haven't had any plugin issues yet.

I'm on the 2014 model quad 2.8 macbook pro, not much more powerful than yours (around 10% clock for clock from ivy bridge to haswell), and i can finally work in 64 buffer in PT for the first time ever (at 44K) or 128 buffer at 96K instead of 256 buffer.
All cores loaded evenly. I highly recommend this release.
