Seems to be an overpowering of the FW-bus, but how? The Saffire doesn't consume power from FW. Does anyone else have this issue, too?
Any suggestions?
Put the drive behind the 56.

I know this is contrary to Avid's suggested configuration, but in my experience daisychaining with my 003... self-powered drives don't work well when first in the chain.

But I didn't daisychain. The Saffire is hooked up to the back of my MacPro, and the HDD to the front port of the Mac.

Yeah I realize, but there does seem to be a drain on the bus with self-powered drives.

When you put the drive behind the Saffire, then it's powering the drive rather than the Mac's FW bus.

Okay, I see. Makes sense.
What doesn't make sense is, that the FW bus of the Mac is overstrained by giving juice to a 2.5" hdd. However, I'll try putting the drive behind the Saffire. Need to get another 400 to 800 cable for that.

Thanks, Dism!

Yeah it sounds a bit funny at first... but 7200 RPM drives tend to be rather power hungry. While the 56 is probably not using much power from the bus... it's most likely just enough to strain the bus. I can tell you I've never had success daisychaining two self-powered drives on any single FireWire bus.

May I ask why you are using a self-powered drive on a Mac Pro considering you can stack up several internal drives with much better performance results? The only situation I use self-powered drives is when I'm in a very mobile situation and power supply is in question.

I'm not working on that drive. It's my transport unit for exchanging stuff with a company I often work for. So I just hook it up, when I need to copy stuff, which doesn't make it that big of a deal, that I can't use it parallel with the Saffire.
It's inconvenient though, because sometimes I would like to save a session copy directly out of PT to that drive. Being as it is, I always have to save the copy on my internal drive, close PT, switch off the Saffire, connect the external drive, finder-copy the folder, and then everything vice versa.

Yeah makes sense.

Hopefully you have better luck chaining it.
