Its modular sequence design was useful. You could build a set of sequences, and then try them out in different orders just by pressing letters on the computer keyboard. You could change tempos on them independently, allowing a film composer who had just received a new video tape to quickly check that the scene changes would still work.

Somebody mentioned the Audio>MIDI and vice versa. It also had a powerful set of CC transformation and manipulation tools. Remember Transmogrify? You could scale CC and pitchbend data. You could make MIDI selections algorithmically - every other note, every third note, that kind of thing. Even the lowly Power Tracks Pro could pull off much of that. It's just not PT's forte.

Been a MIDI user since 1991 or so. Wow, coming on 30 years. :0
I've used MIDI since '85, and it's still a very important part of my workflow. Pro Tools MIDI has come a long way from, say 10 years ago, though there are still issues to be solved. As much as I look forward to MIDI 2, I must commend the creators of MIDI for a solid job well done. A super idea that's been working flawlessly since 1983 or so when it first came out. Those were the days when things were done 'properly' once and for all, by people who cared...

It has indeed worked nearly perfectly within the limits of its painfully outdated design. I do wish they'd been more forward thinking about the certainty of processor speed improvements, though, and its implications for better data rates. Even within the original DX family instruments where it was first widely implemented, the unsuitable coarseness of 7-bits for many CC implementations was obvious.
