Default PT 11 and 12 crashing while saving

I have spent the last year loathing 11. I switched to 12 because I heard it was much more stable etc etc. I am having the absolutely most frustrating time wit 12 crashing while saving. It also is unable to quit properly without flat lining in the Not Responding state.

After a crash it creates a randomly named file (hqhrZCHWsvrcSRFX), I imagine the save file it was trying to create.

If I could go back to 10 I would in an instant.

Has anyone experienced this issue? I have hundreds of files I can send. It has made sessions a joke and all I can say is this is AVID. I work in a picture facility as well cutting larger Food Network type shows, cutting with Media Composer 8, and the issues the editors are having are endless.

I'd really appreciate some insight. Sorry for the rant.

I've completely rebuilt system drives, tried various decimal releases of OS X, switched recording drives, and system drives. Repaired disk permissions, repaired disks. Still the issue persists. With or without auto save on. I'm hoping someone has had this issue so I can skip the step of taking the processor card and interface because I need those to work.

Mac Pro 5,1 Mid 2010
24 gigs ram
UAD Quad-Card PCIe
UAD Apollo Quad (firewire using additional PCIe firewire card)
Mac OS X 10.10.2 (same issues with newer OS versions)
Recording to a RAID0 internal RAID (saving while crashing happens with external HDDs and SSDs as well)

You are not alone.

PT 11 crashes when saving on me too, as well as when I open a session at 88.2 and change the buffer setting.

There is at least comfort in knowing I'm not alone...

Everything is up to date, optimized, deleted preferences, blah, blah, blah...

Still crashes.

I'm about to do a fresh install and see if that helps.

I know its too late now, but if you had a backup plan in place, you WOULD be able to go back to 10 I wish people would stop blindly updating everything, the instant there's an upgrade available(at least not without a backup plan)

Great advise.

I have a drive with every version of Pro Tools sitting in a stack. Some on multiple OS versions too. Hard drives are cheap compared to the cost of headaches.

I have a separate install of 10.8.5 with 10 on it. I still have my license. I upgraded the video cards to also do picture work. So I need Yosimite to run an unflashed GPU (GFX970) on a Mac. Plus I have a 21:9 monitors which make editing a dream, and viewing mix page; and that won't run with the 5770 graphics card that came with my computer. I would upgrade to a trashcan mac, BUT I would have to lose the UAD PCIe cards.

It wasn't blind per say. I just can't go back in the sense that I don't won't to nor should I have to. There has to be a solution.

Default Re: PT 11 and 12 crashing while saving

My system, powered by a 15-inch 2011 MacBook Pro with OS X 10.8.5 running PT 11 software/Avid Eleven Rack hardware (used as the sound card), a few days ago started crashing, only while trying to save the first pass (recording) of a NEW-ly created project. I read on this BB that I needed to upgrade to PT 11.3.2, plus the firmware for the Avid Eleven Rack, which I did, but it DID NOT resolve the problem.

Fortunately, I purchased the PT 10 & PT 11 upgrade from PT MP9.

PT 10 still works, however I have yet NOT downloaded/installed the latest upgrades for PT 10, either? Also, PT 10 is 32 bit architecture, PT 11 is 64 bit. Losing AIR Creative's Virtual Instrument drumming program, STRIKE, in PT 11 new 64 bit architecture seemed bogus to me, but OK. Then today I see AIR Creative's STRIKE 64-bit program (now compatible with PT 11) on sale for $104? Wait a minute, I already paid for this program in PT MP9, and the upgrade to PT 10. Losing STRIKE, (the ONLY stock drumming Virtual Instrument program in Pro Tools I can find), in PT 11 was a big let down for me. Now, Avid wants to charge me for this program to work again, because they made it obsolete. Now that STRIKE has a 64 bit version, compatible w/PT 11, should we have to pay $104 again for something that was once rightfully ours from the beginning. Initially rendered obsolete by Avid, but later revised by AIR Creative to work in PT 11, it only seems fair this program should be offered to loyal customers at NO CHARGE!!!?

Of course, the crashing of ALL new projects created in PT 11 is a much bigger issue, however, collectively all these issues cause me to ponder the possibilities of their competitor's products???

Yes, on Win 7 Ultimate, enough of an issue with 10 AND 11 that I disabled session file backups. Thing is, if it auto-saved while it was doing ANYTHING, it would crash and corrupt the session. I haven't tried it with PT 12 yet, I'm just in the habit of frequently doing a ctrl-s. Side note: 12 HP Win 7 Enterprise PCs at the college running PT 12, session file backups enabled, not one save-related crash all semester. Odd.

So I have solved this issue for me by Not saving at all and relying on auto backup every 2 minutes with 50 backups... I have the save twitch you develop after years of hitting save after any adjustment. It's hard work to NOT save, and now when I do save, I wait a second and cross my fingers. It's creates great banter when I'm working with artists.

After this past week of intense work and editing, I have been relying on auto saving only. This seems like a big deal to have this crash when saving.

My last issue is not being able to quit the program fully. I Close session - then hit quit - PT will idle in the not responding state for a whole day until I forceable quit the program.
