Default 2 mbox probs: mix control switch + latency, help!

Here's my system:
ibook G4, 1.33GHz, 768 mbRam, PT 6.7, OS 10.3.5

I'm putting down vocals over some basic tracks. BEFORE I record-enable the track, My mix control switch seems to work, that is, when I turn it to the left (input) i hear my mike, when I turn it to the right I hear nothing.

When I record enable the track and hit play, i have two problems. Latency, I assume, is causing an annoying vocal delay effect. Hoping I can remedy this using the mix control (ie. hear less or none of my vocal as I record it) I find that it doesn't work. The input is heard at the same level no matter which position the switch is at. This also happens when I use the mono button.

Has anyone experienced this problem?

Thanks,
Paul

You need to mute the track you are recording to, then use the mix knob to balance the levels of previously recorded tracks (and/or click) with the input to the muted record-enabled track.

also, it helps to engage the MONO button which puts the direct signal (what you are recording- in this case vocals) in the center instead of on the left.
