As the starter of this thread I can now say that we finally have an answer.

For me, I put my HD Native system up for sale in the classified section yesterday. PT12 Vanilla cost me $199 with my ancient PT8LE license back in November last year and is current till end of March 2016. It will cost me $99/year to keep current there after. The HD price of $599 + $399 by the end of 2016 represents 10 years of Vanilla updates. End of story
