I'm looking for an affordable but good compressor plug in. I know affordable and good sounding are hard to come by in the same item but hopefully somebody has a couple suggestions. I own a couple nice HHB leveling /compressors that I really like and am hoping I can find a comp plug-in that can do some nice tube leveling stuff similiar to them, preferably something that won't color the sound too much and work well on many different instruments.

Compressor Bank by McDSP. I use it on many tracks - as well as the master fader. It has an analog sound. Seriously.

A little on the slightly more "flavorful" side, but very useful and reasonably priced is the Vintage Warmer by PSP Audioware (I believe they have a downloadable RTAS trial version). I don't think it's guite the level of the McDSP stuff, but worth considering if you're juggling numbers.
Hope that is useful, - Proxy

so I've looked into both the PSP Vintage warmer, which I just downloaded the Demo to try out but I can't try out the McDSP stuff cause you need an ILOK and I don't have one yet. Anyway I've been trying to find a place with good prices on the McDSP stuff and there really aren't many places online that carry them or even give much of a price break on them. Anybody got any suggestions. Oh yeah and how do these plugs do as far as CPU comsupmtion.....it looks like the McDSP may be more oriented towards the HD/TDM systems rather than the LE?

Are you in OS9 or OSX? They are very CPU friendly, and did I mention they sound pretty analog? I couldn't tell you where to get them, however. And it's not more oriented to the other platforms. LE loves compressor Bank.

I'm in OSX on a G4 with 1gig Ram and a 1.4ghz processor, running Jaguar but considering the move to Panther. have you ever compared the McDSP stuff to the Bomb Factory(now Digidesign) Compressors?

How much is affordable?
I tried out the Bomb Factory LA2A and 1176, they sounded so good I sprung for the money. I got the 48k version, so it was cheaper. I like the sound of the LA2A better, but I like to use the 1176 for just a touch of limiting on the final. Mark

well affordable is hopefully around $300 or under but if a plug-in is really that good then I'd be willing to spend a little more. I'm not in the arena of being able to spend $500 on a single plug-in. I've been playing around with the demo version of the PSP VW and I must admit...it has a very cool sound, I put in on a bass track and it really made it sound much better.
Only issue I have is I'd like something with a sidechain so I can use it for de-essing (It seems like the PSP VW is more of an instrument/mastering levelar) but for the price it seems very reasonable. also I put about 6 instances of it on a song just to see how it would tax my machine and it was sucking quite a bit of life out of my CPU and there is no Audio Suite version of it to (simply and easily) print the track. |

The VW has a audio suite plug-in, probably not on the demo.
