My 2 cents:
1- shop for a deal on 3 matching sticks of RAM(probably 8GB sticks) because, if memory serves, the X58 motherboards were designed to run triple-channel RAM. Since there's no way that 10GB divides by 3, your RAM setup may be slowing you down.
2-maybe spring for a 980X cpu(which should be a bargain these days). I did that upgrade on my old X58/920 system and it helped some.
3-maybe get all SSD drives and replace any spinners you have(recording and/or samples)
4-if you have cash for a new system, is that expense going to make sense for your needs? If yes, then I would probably build an entire new computer and not recycle anything from the old. That way, the old PC continues to work just as it is and you don't mess it up by robbing parts for the new rig(if the new rig has problems, the old rig can be pressed into service so you can still record).

Are you running Windows 10 or 7? What interface? Its not possible to give too much info

I am also running v11 and just bought the second-to-last Reinstatement package in stock at RSPE Audio Solutions ($300) as an alternative to switching to subscription. I plan to upgrade to 12.7 (unless wiser folk here advise against) and use it for a year before deciding whether to go to 2021.x.

You do know this thread is about non HD questions of upgrading from PT11 to PT2020?

Well you asked. IMHO:

1) You will find most joy from a faster computer. You don't have to spend much, but your 930 is very slow by todays standards. The CPU Mark for an new i5 system is 10X your older system - CPU mark is a 'reasonable' surrogate for DAW performance.

2) The only major updates that have significantly impacted my workflow are the non real time export and the Commit function. Both are very useful and save significant time. Other than that, not so much in the truly useful category - though some other updates are nice to have (just nothing from 2020).

3) If you audio interface is also 10 years old that might be a great place to update. Converter performance on even low end models is pretty good now.

4) I would not worry too much about plugins. I do believe that all AAX Waves plugins will run on a Win 10 machine with PT 11. If not, you can find other vendors that likely will.

5) I would wait until the M1 thing settles down for Avid. I expect most of their development resources for the next year will be focused on getting an optimized M1 version out the door. Not so much new stuff for Win 10 people.

YMMV

PS

I agree with others we need a running list of new features. I made one for 2020 and was not so impressed.

IMO 12.4 / 12.5.1 was the sweet spot of "recent" versions, and since then little of significant value has happened. Except Dark Mode, of course ;p

Yes. of course. I was just thinking that he may like to try the performance of the 2020 version (Ultimate or not, does not matter) on his current rig. That is all.

If your current rig is serving your needs and still working, then keep using it. Eventually, you'll have to upgrade both hardware and software.

Wow…

Thank you so much, Darryl... Your single suggestion, of all the things I’ve heard, all the research I have done, has pretty much eradicated the difficulties I was having with PT 11. Zap… Gone! Who would’ve thunk! No more waiting for five seconds upon activating record… No more computer freezes for five seconds about every two minutes… Seemingly, a thing of the past! Thank you!

Well… The biggest reason I would consider either updating my computer or updating PT is that this will be the only time I could reasonably do it. With everything working well now, I’m hesitant.

As for plug-ins… There are new Waves plug-ins that look interesting and useful, but their customer service reps “do not believe” their newer plug-ins will work on a PT 11 system. He was not willing to commit to that declaration, though. I am on Waves version 9.6.

Anybody running newer series of Waves plug-ins on older PT systems with any success?
