The whole point of having larger amounts of RAM on-board a video card is so that it shouldn't need to allocate system RAM at all.

Still having trouble locating that other thread mentioned above by the way, I'd really like to read through it.
Its doesn't really work that way though....A VERY simplified explanation is that Windows needs to match all that oncard video memory with a virtual frame buffer to keep it feed. Since a 32bit OS can only see 4GB of RAM the OS allocates that RAM into a 2GB space for the OS and a 2GB space for applications. For whatever reason the frame buffer or System Resource allocation comes out of the 2GB application space not the 2Gb OS space. This is why Windows will show that you only have 2.5-3.5 GB out of your 4GB in the System Properties box. Anything you add with a video frame buffer (example a TV tuner card) will also pull from this space.

With a 32bit OS smaller is better in this respect. PT demands a high performance computer but it's a bit different than a gaming/Photoshop/Video rendering machine.

What about if you're running Snow Leopard? Snow Leopard is a 64 bit OS, though PT runs in 32 bit. Does this apply to Mac users as well?
