Default imac extra monitors compatibility

Hello, here's my question:
I want to know if I can link an extra wide monitor (34") to a 27" new imac (for working with Pro Tools)
Thanks in advance.

Yes, if by new you mean current gen iMac. Pretty vague just saying new.

Just make sure you have the correct cable or adapters to work with the panel you buy.

But the details matter...

Current 2019 iMacs have a single Thunderbolt 3 bus (with two connectors), if your monitor is not Thunderbolt 3 compatible you need a dongle/adapter like a Thunderbolt 3 to HDMI, or Thunderbolt 3 to mini-DisplayPort or DisplayPort. Or a Thunderbolt 3 dock that has a HDMI port, etc.

And then there is the question of what display resolution and refresh rates supported, the maximum external display resolution supported on Thunderbolt 3 is a nominal "5K", or dual "4K" monitors, I'm guessing your monitor is not above that.

None of this is really Pro Tools related, Your Apple Store or Apple support are likely best places to get further help if you are not sure about what adapter is needed, or what exact display resolutions and refresh rates will work with that adapter.

Details do matter.

Which is why I said ‘pretty vague just saying new’.

Hello, thanks everyone for your answers. This is the iMac:

2019 Apple iMac 27in Retina 5K Core i5 3.7GHZ 1TB SSD 32GB Radeon Pro 580x

What about the aspect ratio and resolution of the 34in monitor?. The same as the iMac?

Thanks again

We cannot guess anything about the resolution of some 34in monitor you are looking at. You can find the specs and compare to the iMac screen specs.

Why does aspect ratio matter? Things that are likely to matter more are resolution and edge height of any two adjacent monitors. But you can adjust each monitor's virtual screen position to line things up. I get so used to running a MBP screen next to an 27" 5k monitor that it becomes second nature.

The 34" Ultrawide screens I have seen are mostly 2560x1080. Don't rule out setting screens above and below instead of side by side. It can work quite nicely

I work with some developers who put two wide screen monitors rotated to vertical next to each other. Very handy for looking at long code listings. One guy started doing it and others followed, it really is nice. But for Pro Tools yes I see how two horizontal screens stacked on top of each other could work great.
