Default Overlapping Clip Edges

Is it possible to set the behavior of overlapping one clip's edge onto another to do true trims instead of layered overlapping? For example, if you drag Clip A's edge past adjacent Clip B's edge, then pull Clip A's edge back again, Clip B's edge should end where it was trimmed by that overlap, rather than returning to its former length.

I had thought turning Layered Editing off would accomplish this, but even with that mode off, layered edges remain.

I'm not sure I understand the question, but if you are talking about pulling clip A's edge back causing a gap to appear when you'd prefer clip B to follow ... then use the trim tool instead from the B side of the edit, essentially pushing clip A's edge back.

If you want the two clips to overlap in a nonstandard way then move clip A to an adjacent track and adjust with complete freedom.

(See, I probably don't get the question.)

Yes, if I understand the question. With the Smart Tool enabled, hold down the Mac keyboard Control and Command keys (you can look up the Windows equivalent if needed). The cursor will turn into an I-beam with a little arrow in it. Both regions will be trimmed.
