It's seem to be something Apple has changed as they updated there OS's. The Meter and Transport slowdown began showing up In Yosemite for me when I had a lot of plugins open, and has gotten aggressively worse with EI Capitan. I agree I don't think it's the graphic cards. I talked to Avid support and they had no clue on how to fix it.

seems the lag is also in the playback engine ... at 128 samples I can't run anything smoothly ... Logic is now way ahead !

I can tell you a couple of things.
12.5 now works on my unqualified (which was qualified for PT 10) Core2Duo 2009 MacBook Pro. It would only open every 3rd time or so on launch and would freeze (beach ball) when opening sessions.
So after spending the money to upgrade to 12 and all my AAX plugins, I had to buy a new computer since I had paid for support but got the standard answer....we can't help you because you are using an unqualified computer.
$2000 later, I have 2 computers, the old one and the new one, which now run 12.5 exactly the same.
Meters still are not smooth if you have ANY plugin open.
Edit window is jumpy during playback.
Luckily never had noise blasts.
Been a user long enough to know optimization techniques.

4 core i7 2.6
core2duo

Identical results.

I guess I should at least give AVID credit for giving me a reason to go buy a new toy.

protools is really bad on low buffer sizes especially with NI instruments in the session..

I mostly don't use NI and mostly don't have performance problems. What can you say about that? :)

I use NI in all my session and have no problems at all on my current system. I can run VI's down as low as a 64 buffer.

(edited) I must be more specific. I have NI Ultimate everything runs fine at a 64 buffer in Pro Tools except Kontakt. The more you load it up the worst it gets. Mostly instruments that use large samples and your are right Other apps do a better job at low latency.

agreed. Can't use 64 buffer on my PCIe RME RayDAT card. Yet any other plugin or sampler outside of pro tools works on 32 (including kontakt) no problems at all. I can get away with 64 for tracking audio. But any VI, it's game over. Especially Kontakt, which I use more than any other!
