Designate Valid Audio Playback volumes
I just upgraded from a G4 to a G5 Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC with 2.5 GB RAM and 275 GB HD.
Using the Migration Tool I transferred my original profile from the G4 to the G5. When the transfer was complete I received the following error when launching ProTools (LE 7.3) on my G5: "This session is saved on a volume set to "Transfer" only. Set the volumes in question to Playback or Record in the Workspace. Otherwise choose OK..." (Protools is installed on my HD and my sessions reside on an external 300 GB drive.) When I try to change the settings in the Work Space I receive this error: "Big Cow" cannot be designated as an Audio Playback volume because it is not a valid audio volume." I then tried to unlock the selected volume in the Work Space but I receive the same error. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Re: Designate Valid Audio Playback volumes
Forgot to mention I also repaired permissions on my HD, trashed
Digidesign databases and prefs. Still getting the same errors!

Re: Designate Valid Audio Playback volumes
Might be a problem related to the HD formatting. Were the HD's formatted using the Apple Disk utility before the transfer?

Re: Designate Valid Audio Playback volumes
The external HDs I store all my ProTools files on were also used with my G4. All I did was
migrate the G4 profile over to my new G5.

Re: Designate Valid Audio Playback volumes
this shouldn't be too hard to fix.
Try right clicking on your external and see if there is a checkmark where it says "Ignore Permissions" Check the status on that first. If it's checked then un-check it. It it's Un-checked, then check it. Then go back to the workspace and make sure it's set to the correct settings in the small 2 colums. The settings are on digidesigns page somewhere I just can't remember where right now. anyway we can start there and let us know what happens. |

Re: Designate Valid Audio Playback volumes
Ignore ownership on this volume was unchecked so I checked it and
when I return to the Work Space window I'm still not able to change the drive to Playback or Record. I tried uninstalling PT LE 7 using the online installer but it kept getting hung up. Ended up using the 6.9.2 installer that came with my Digi002 and uninstalled ProTools. Then I successfully reinstalled 6.9.2 I tried installing PT7 using the online installer and it gets hung up at 376 more items to install and I have to force quit. Help...

Re: Designate Valid Audio Playback volumes
If this installation is an upgrade, or an older version of Pro Tools exists
from another system, then all previous versions of Pro Tools should be removed before installing (unless otherwise stated in the documentation.) Not completely removing an older version of Pro Tools before you install your new version can cause severe errors in the operating system, such as Windows Registry or Mac Library corruption. These errors may be resolved by uninstalling all versions of Pro Tools (including the current version), but in worst-case scenarios you may need to reinitialize your operating system. Remember, before installing Pro Tools, follow the instructions in the Getting Started Guide regarding installing and configuring your Pro Tools system. This may also be a good time to back up your system to a restore point. There are several third-party applications that let you save a copy of your current operating system, such as Norton Ghost, Acronis TrueImage, and Carbon Copy Cloner. You can consult with your computer manufacturer or dealer for more information. Once your computer has been correctly configured and optimized, you can install Pro Tools. Removing Pro Tools on Windows XP To remove Pro Tools 7.1 and below on Windows XP: 1. Choose the appropriate version in the Windows Add or Remove Programs list in the Control Panel. 2. When prompted, choose the uninstall option that removes the most items (i.e., Digidesign Pro Tools, databases, drivers, etc.). 3. Restart your computer when prompted. Removing Pro Tools on Mac OSX To remove Pro Tools 7.1.1 and above: 1. Open the Mac HD/Applications/Digidesign/Pro Tools/Pro Tools Utilities folder. 2. Run the Uninstall Pro Tools utility. 3. When prompted, choose “Clean Uninstall.” 4. When the uninstaller is finished, select “Quit.” To remove Pro Tools 7.1 and below: 1. Run the regular installation off the disk or web installer and select "Uninstall" on the Custom Install page. 2. When prompted, choose "Clean Uninstall." 3. When the uninstaller is finished, select “Quit.” Installation Errors Pro Tools must be installed on the system drive for proper performance. If you have installed Pro Tools to a non-system drive (such as an external FireWire drive), Use the correct steps to uninstall Pro Tools, and then install Pro Tools on the system drive. Always be sure to double-check that your version of Pro Tools is compatible with your operating system. Current compatibility information can be found on the Digidesign website Support section on this page: http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?...&itemid=23954. Follow the steps outlined in the Getting Started or Upgrading To Pro Tools Guides for proper installation. Let us know how you make out. Meko |

Re: Designate Valid Audio Playback volumes
Meko,
Thanks. I just ran the uninstaller for PT 7.3, but when I resinstall using the PT 7 web installer it gets hung up at 376 more items to install everytime. I then have to force quit. Update: I believe this is happening because I'm low on HD space. I'll let you know what happens after I open up some more space. Glenn

Re: Designate Valid Audio Playback volumes
After you un-install, did you check to make sure everything is removed?
Like: 1. Open Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/ and make sure that all your Digidesign stuff is gone. After the Un-install also open the Volumes folder and delete all of its contents. Pro Tools Preferences: 1. Open Macintosh/Users/*Login Name*/Library/Preferences. 2. Delete the following items: • com.digidesign.protools.plist • DAE Prefs folder • DigiSetup.OSX • Pro Tools Preferences Make sure is all gone. And where it says "Login Name" above...That should be your mac computer account user name. Hold up! What OSX Do you have? |

Re: Designate Valid Audio Playback volumes
I'm running 10.4.11, the same OS that was on my G4 running PT 7.3
Also, I have plenty of disk space available on my internal hd - 192 gb Here's an update: I installed PT 7 successfully from the Digi site but when I launch the program it gets hung up here: "Loading Plug-ins Broadband Noise Reduction LE.dp Here's another update: I downloaded and installed PT 7.3 from the Digi site and the program still gets hung up at the same place. I found the culprit!!! I removed the Broadband Noise Reduction LE plug-in and the program launches fine. When I open up a session I get this alert: Could not create a new User preset file Yes -- No -- Cancel No matter what I hit it does open the session and my external drives are all Record and Play enabled. Please advise on what this alert means. Also, I went to the digistore to my account to download my mp3 option again and it's not available on the website. How do I install that option? I have my authorization code. Thanks, Glenn
