Default what interface should I get?

Ideally I'd like something that's halfway between an M-box and 002. Is there an m-audio device that is small and cheap but has a lightpipe so I later can add multitrack inputs?

I'm contemplating jumping in and getting FW 1814, but it's hard to justify when most of the work I do is just editing and mixing (recording is done elsewhere and imported).

Or, should I get Transit and then later upgrade to FW 1814 + a preamp when I do need multi inputs?
Mobility is an issue.

(It's to work with a powerbook G4 with external FW harddrive, Os X 10.4.5)

I don't think that will work too well with a powerbook...
