Default The OMNI - will it be opened up by AVID?

Anyone want to hazard a guess as to "if" AVID would ever open the omni up to record more than 4 simultaneous inputs at once?

B/c as I remember it seems that this is still the Achilles heel of the unit.....

There are only 4 A/D converters so 4 analog is all it has
You can record 4 analog + 4 Digital though.

Yep, it is capable of 8 IO as long as you have some outboard preamps with digital outputs

And then you might aswell look into some other 3rd party interfaces as the price will land on a similar level

There is that Personally, I think Avid blew it with the OMNI and should have made it capable of 16 inputs total. Much as I might enjoy having one in my setup, the limitations leave me cold

Yes that would have been great

Although OMNI have IMHO Great preamps and we bought one just for those 2 pre's since we got one on loan until our HD 16X16 i/o came in to the dealer and we fell for the OMNI, Negotiated a seriously good price ($999) two years ago so we ended up with an extra Omni in the HDX setup just because we got such great sound from one of the Manley Gold mics we use.

Even though we have lots of expensive outboard gear we still use the OMNI preamps wuite a lot for vocals and a Manley Ref Gold so imagine if the OMNI was Thunderbolt and could be used outside of PT ecosysten ... *imagine*

Beats me why the new Avid-branded interfaces do not have TB built in. That would have been a selling point for many blue Digidesign interface owners such as myself, but no. There's nothing wrong in 192 AD/DA conversion so the price tag for little better converters isn't making me buy new ones.

Well TBH the HD I/O's came out when TB was but a "wee little chap".

TB has become quite a bit more common these days, I however seriously doubt Avid putting R&D $€£₯'s into that at this point.

Default Re: The OMNI - will it be opened up by AVID?

I am hooking up my brand new OMNI from Audiodeluxe ($995) into my SoundGrid system (Omni + DLI + IOX + PT12.1 Vanilla) today. 12 channels in the live room via IOX (Ethernet), 4 channels in the Mix room for overdubs, VI and electric guitar tracking + monitor control (OMNI has preamps, HP, DI, Monitor Control and lots of output possibilities).

Can run it as HD Native if needed or via SoundGrid can use it with any DAW and have low latency tracking through plugins. Can even have as many OMNIs as I want ...

If AVID would have put a two DSP chip mini HDX in the OMNI - that would have been the stuff!
