Sod it buying a Mac now
Always been a PC guy and had a PC made for my PT HD rig but the reliability has just got the best of me now so I’m buying a PE6r4 chassis to house my PCI-X cards and a Mac. Can any one recommend a Mac to buy that will give me the best performance possible with the rig I’m going to be using Pro Tools 10 HD

2012 Mac Pro - 12 core version with a SSD for a boot drive.
Or you can buy a 2009/2010 Mac Pro and do the upgrade yourself and save some cash.... Musicman is in the know about this stuff...and there are threads here about it. When purchasing make sure it comes with the appropriate OS install that PT10 supports Here is the compatibility chart http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...tibility-Chart

I would personally try to wait for the new Mac Pro.
Nobody can tell you what will work for you. Cheese graters may be fine. No Thunderbolt on them. No support for NVMe boot SSD. SATA II only on the motherboard and PCIe slots only PCIe 2. But still can be fine boxes. Not much info here... how many cards? can you replace the PCI-X cards with PCIe cards and run then inside a cheese grater chassis? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

PCI-X cards will work for a chassis that (outputs) terminates with a PCIE card.
Go big, anything older than a 2009 might have issues before too long....2009 is the oldest I would go. I just sold a 2010 MP with a 6core for $700 US last year. That’s cheap.....

As has been said there are options that can be done by the end user that aren't all that complicated. I'm talking like swapping out a single cpu processor tray for a dual processor unit with a pair of 3.46 GHz hex core cpu's. The system I have has a single 3.46 GHz hex core in it right now. Once I get this all working I'll be putting in a Mercury Accelsior E2 pcie card for my boot drive from OWC - plenty fast for my needs. Not sure if I'm going to go to an ssd for PT to record to or an enterprise class 7200 rpm spinner. All backups will be going to what I use now - 7200 rpm spinners in an external rack via FW800. After all I really don't need extravagant speed for backups. |

Re: Sod it buying a Mac now
There is no TB and that's true but you can add USB3 and USB3.1 cards to a cheesegrater. And really with a pcie card like the Mercury Accelsior E2 in a card slot it'll boot plenty fast.
