Default Sluggish Window Scrolling and response

Hi,

ProTools HD2 version 8.

I have this one project that after a few minutes starts to respond slowly in scrolling etc. The Edit window will not scroll smoothly and when selecting regions by double clicking that too is delayed a second or two. I have many tracks and thought maybe the template I was using was bad.

I rebuilt the template from scratch and still am experiencing trouble. Another client uses a different template but relative same track and voice count. That template and project has no problems with window redraw / scrolling etc.

I've tried different cache and buffer settings. Work is slowed considerable for me. Any ideas?

There was a thread a while ago that may be related.
The fix was to go to control panel on the Mac and select monitors.
Toggle back and forth between thousands and millions of colors.
That fixed it for some people.
Could be something totally different though.
Worth a try.

Have you cleared unused regions recently?

Probably unrelated but I had a session yesterday which suddenly slowed down just like you describe for no obvious reason. I realised in the end it was because I had a score window open behind my mix window and it was slow because it was trying to space a score for the many hundreds of MIDI tracks I had in the session. Closing the score window then closing and reopening the session brought it back to life.

Thanks for the info... some follow up.

I've done some narrowing down.

Client A who's mixes never get bogged down and has higher track and effect counts....
I import sluggish client B's material into it and it gets bogged down.

If I import Clients A's material in sluggish client B's template it does not get bogged down.

I built a new template from scratch for Client B and it still acts the same way.
So...
I figure something is wrong with the audio files. I look at the project browser and everything is of one bit / sample rate.

Before I spend a day looking for a needle in the haystack... Any new ideas?

I have to restart Protools everey 10 minutes because I can't work waiting for the windows and interface to catch up to my clicks.

Have you tried regenerating waveform overviews, fade files and EA files?

If you import them and choose 'copy from source media' onto a new drive instead of 'link to source' is it the same? Is there any chance a bad or failing disk could be the culprit?

FWIW,

I had the same problem. Saved copy in... same. Imported tracks to new session same.

Trashed prefs using that great util at the top of the DUC.

Everything back to being quick.

Issues were drag copy wav files to region bin (30 second lag, Scrub took about 5 seconds to switch to scrub before playing and back again. Just overall dragging.

PT 8 CS3 HD3 PCIe Quad Core G5 4.5 gigs of ram.

Overall this system works quite well. VIs are the only thing that tend to bog it down.

I trashed my prefs and all seems to be back to normal. I hate resetting my prefs and that's probably why it never occurred to me to try it.

Thanks all.

Problems returned and started to get worse in ALL projects. It's bad RAM. I pulled half of my RAM and now EVERYTHING is normal for the last 6 hours.
