Default Help Please, Buying a Mix Plus

Hey users, I'm buying a Mix Plus (upgrading from the 001...Windows XP) and I was wondering if a Mac G4 450 enough power to us a Mix Plus. If not, what are your suggestions. I'm also looking at a G4 500. What type of results have you guy gotten with these Macs. I just want to know should I go for a better G4, maybe dual processor or is a 450/500 good enough.

Thanks

Mix ran well on the old 9600 so the G4 isn't the problem...BUT OS X might be. That 500 G4 will be snappy in OS 9 but will probably be slugish in OS X. If your going to OS X (and I imagine you are) I would recomend a DP 1.25 or better G4 or a G5 if that's poss. At the moment the Mix hardware is having some issues with the G5, so if your in a hurry that's probably not the best option. So if you go with the G4 (500) I would look at the CPU upgrades at Other World Computing and go for the fastest you can swing. If your buying new (new to you) I would check out the last of the G4's that are out now, they are pretty cheap and will make your system fly.

Oh and OS X seems to really like DP's so get a DP if you can.

You'll be able to run a Mix+ on OSX with a G4/500 no problem. I'm using an HD3 with OSX on a G4/500 and it works great.

Granted, you'll be somewhat limited as far a processing goes since a Mix+ will become tapped out fairly quickly with modern plugins, but if you're a conservative mixer you'll be okay.

I plan on upgrading to a G5 as soon as the next gen's come out and the prices for current models go down; I want to be able to do more with RTAS plugins (the most popular format for softsynths), and I'm admittedly strapped in that area with the G4/500.

Good luck,
Andre

I run Panther on a G4/500 no problem. I believe it's just as fast maybe even a bit faster than with OS9. This is not the computer that I use with my Pro Tools rig but as for G4/500 compatibility with OS X you should be fine.

If you have the budget, the dual processors do help OSX run better.

I'm running a G4533, 684M RAM, Mix Core, 5 Mix Farms and 1 DSP Farm with OS 9.1 and PT 5.1.1 with no problems.

You can run PT on that machine no problem, but a more macho one will allow you to run a lot more RTAS plug-ins in addition to the ones running on your MIX cards. Its screens also won't slow down as much in larger sessions.

I noticed a substantial difference between my last machine, a dual 450, and my present dual gig G4. But it depends on what you're doing. I run a lot of software instruments and always want to insert one more plug-in; your needs may be different.

I use a G4 450 AGP, and to go to OSX I upgraded the firmware, put in an ATI Radeon 9000, a Sonnet 1.2 GHz CPU upgrade, and pushed the RAM to 1.4 Gb and it works fine.
Upgrading the processor has vastly improved PCI bus performance even in OS9.
