Default CCITT u-Law Encoding

Anyone know if this is possible in Pro-Tools? Just got a question about recording and encoding to this format which I have never heard about before.

You cannot do this in Pro Tools.

Believe it or not, you can do this right in Windows. CCITT u-Law is usually for phone systems. All you need is a mono source wav file. Open it in Microsoft's Sound Recorder and select save as... Change the format to CCITT u-Law, select its attributes and save. This can also ne done in Audacity, but it's much more complicated.

I'm also looking for audio conversion software for mac. Is Barbabatch (395 USD) the only alternative for mac?
Sox probably works but I cannot even figure out how to start using it.
Suggestions welcomed.

Maybe Amadeus is suitable for you? I use it to convert wavs to mp3s all the time.

Wow! I cannot believe that the cheapest option is $60 to convert a wave file to CCITT u-Law on a Mac. Crazy! Guess I'll keep my PC around for this very reason.

I got Audacity to work. Here is how you do it:

1. Open Audacity.
2. Open the mono Wav file.
3. Click on the bottom left corner Project Rate icon to change the sample rate to 8000.
4. Go File-Preferences and click on File Formats. Under Uncompressed Export Format, choose other.
5. Choose WAV (Microsoft) for the Header and U-Law for Encoding. Hit OK.
6. Now just select the audio file and use File-"Export As WAV" Choose the location and save.

Once I did all of this, the phone messaging system accepted the file.

I'm glad I wrote the post above. I ran into this same problem again and I forgot that I figured out how to do it in Audacity. After searching Google, I found my own post that reminded me how to do it.

It goes to show that sharing discoveries with other people may just pay off at some point.
