thin guitar sound-eq?
Hi everyone,
I recently recorded a project that involved some heavy guitars(almost metal sounding)and ive got 6 guitar tracks to make them fill up the empty space that two oftentimes leaves. however, they came out sounding somewhat thin, and even after mixing it down to what i thought sounded great on Pro Tools, it doesnt sound the same through speakers(ive tried my home stereo, car, and monitors)...is there some way i can eq it to make it sound bigger? thanks for any suggestions! evan

Re: thin guitar sound-eq?
EQ might help try some "guitar presets" if you have 'em...
some of the same tricks used on Lead Vox can be applied to lead guitar as well... Try doubling then pitch shift a few cents and offset 750-1000 samples, pan hard left/right for a stereo effect. DV |

Re: thin guitar sound-eq?
As always.. you should try and get the sound right while recording.. I'd suggest you try the URS Neve and API style plug-ins.

Re: thin guitar sound-eq?
...there are also some settings on the Bf Tel-Ray that can do the trick.
Wtlight - input: 5 tone: 0 mix: 0 output: 6 variable delay: 10 varition: 3 sustain: 4 echo/doubler: doubler http://www.bombfactory.com/

Re: thin guitar sound-eq?
ok great thanks for the replies. i think what i might just do is redo the guitars and get it right the first time...im using oktava mc012's, gibson SG and marshall half stack in a good sounding little reverb room, i think i just have to tweak around a bit and see what sounds best...does anyone have recommendations for good mic placement giving the best tone? ive found that with very close miking(both condenser and dynamic mics) there seems to be aLOT of treble effect and it comes out sounding trashy in the mix. and if its too far back, then theres too much ambience....maybe one close up one far behind? somewhere in between? hmmm...thanks so much for the replies.

Re: thin guitar sound-eq?
upclose isn't so much of a problem as to what part of the speaker you are placing the mic close to. You might want to put the mic towards the outside of the cone, or the center of the cone depending on the sound your getting. I like to put a 57 about two fingers widths away from the grill at the center of the speaker but pointing to where the inner cone and outer cone meet. I also like to combine the 57 with a condencer thats a couple feet away. Just a thought.

Re: thin guitar sound-eq?
A few things to try:
I you're using two mics.. make sure that you don't have phase cancellation. Try placing the room mic hanging upside down and almost touching the floor. Place the cabinet so it's against a wall - so there isn't open space behind it. Put a packing blanket on the wall behind the cabinet. Rail

Re: thin guitar sound-eq?
Try another mik for instance. MD421 kicks a SM57's ass if you want heavy guitars.
