Simple ASIO USB sound card that can output AC3
I'm stuck at home working, and am looking into a way to use my home theatre for simple editing.
It does not unfortunately have 5.1 analog inputs. Only HDMI or optical/ electrical AC3 for surround. A simple ASIO USB sound card that can make an AC3 stream would work. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Re: Simple ASIO USB sound card that can output AC3
ok. So you set up the mac audio driver to send 5.1?
Never seen that done. I am on pc, and I tried, but couldn't figure out how to tell the driver that it should out put more than two channels. Any way, the motherboard only would then give analog out, so that wouldn't be of much help. So I am looking for a simple USB card that plays nice with PT.

You’ll need an ac3 encoder running as a plugin in Pro Tools to output ac3 format.

Re: Simple ASIO USB sound card that can output AC3
One of my setups is just like what you are describing.
I'm running my Mac via HDMI to a Yamaha receiver with no audio interface in between. If you are on a Mac it's a fairly straight forward configuration, in Utilities open Audio Midi Setup and switch your HDMI out from 2 to 8 (or 6 depending on your receiver). Pretty useful for testing mixes on a consumer/home setup.

Re: Simple ASIO USB sound card that can output AC3
I have used a Decklink for HDMI multichannel output. No need to encode AC3 or decode. Bonus: it will output your video as well. This was on a Macbook, think it was the Thunderbolt box. I had to swap C and LFE (in PT) due to a different HDMI standard but other than that it was working fine.
