Default Thoughts on Overclocking

Hey folks,

I was just curious what the general consensus was on overclocking? I know overclocking too hard can destroy hardware, but I've heard of quite a few people who have had good results with it. Just wanted to hear the community's thoughts.

Cheers,

James

The most important aspect is cooling, since you would be operating components at higher rates with higher temperatures. Personally, my lowly i7 920 has plenty of horsepower at stock settings so I don't bother. Just 1 person's 2 cents

Don't build a racing car if you don't know how to drive it.

Like a racing car, the trick is getting the right balance between performance and long term reliability. I know some computer geeks who get very excited showing off the extra speed they get by overclocking, but oftentimes the actual gain they make is surpassed by pain when their computer stability goes wobbly.

IMHO, it's those who enjoy tinkering with the technical intricacies of a computer that get the most out of overclocking.

My rig is overclocked to 3 Ghz (2.4 stock).
Has been running for three years now, no troubles apart from some occasional PT crashes (believe it or not PT disappears sometimes without warning)

My PT runs fine overclocked......AMDx4.

It is very stable and you get hooked on the quicker performance of the system as a whole.
You might want to check a forum on your mobo/cpu combo if you don't feel 100% about it........

I have burned up a perfectly good CPU by overclocking it....Live and learn

Speed kills. Just had to say it!

Experiment and OC but take your recording environment into consideration (i.e., the higher fan rpm hence noise might interfere with recording. Or, search for a quieter thermal solution). Just a thought. Hey, I'm a geek, so I'd love to OC but just haven't done it. I guess my system's stable and fast enough for my uses at this point.

I will likely try it on my next build. Its an i5 2500K(unlocked) and will use liquid cooling
