Default 2GB RAM limit for Virtual Soft Instruments/PT 8? ?

I'm working on the score of a major feature movie in the moment and I have to work with soft instruments that load a lot os samples in the memory.
Seems that every time I go over 2GB of RAM used for Pro Tools my MacPro with 8Gb of RAM it starts to crash. ( I can see how much RAM memory is used by each application in Activity Monitor. It says that I still have 4GB free). I did try to fine tune my system, but nothing helps.
Could that be a poor Pro Tools RAM management, or I do something wrong?
I have all the newest versions of Plug Ins - most of the time I use Play and NI Komplete 6.
Does somebody else have the same problem?

Well PT is really only at about a 2002 level regarding VIs. I bet they'll catch up to Logic 2010 by 2015 or so.

It's not really ProTools fault, they didn't 'cap' anything, it's just that 32 bit applications, which ProTools still is (it will be a long while we suspect until we see a 64 bit ProTools) can only access 4 gigs of ram. This is a limit for any 32 bit app.

But some plugins can cleverly get around this, and actually, Kontakt 4.1 which just came out in public beta, is a 64 bit plugin, and Play 2.0 was just released a day or so ago, not sure about it. I'm not sure if these will operate as 64 within ProTools, or only as stand-alone.

BUT, your issue sure sounds to me like bad ram. If you're able to use up to 2 gigs but crash over it, I would highly suspect you have a bad ram chip that isn't getting accessed until PT crosses that 2 gig limit, at which point you're crashing.

Although, I just posted a thread where I was seeing something very similar, I was running Play and Kontakt, and ProTools was crashing with a 'critical memory' error, saying I was out of ram. I have 10 gigs in my machine, and ProTools wasn't using even 2 gigs I don't think.

Digi said they thought it was possibly incompatible plugins, but they say that about everything that every goes wrong on a ProTools rig :)

But it could be that too. Try the newest Kontakt 4.1 public beta, and update to Play 2.0 though, as they both just released.

Kontakt 3.5 and 4.0 have a Memory Server capability which allows it to use memory above 4GB to load samples (up to 32GB). This works with 32-bit DAWs and 32-bit OSs. Spectrasonics Omnisphere and Trillium have a similar capability.

Busch I'm not sure how that would work with a 32bit OS when the cap period is 4gig or in the case of PC, unless W7, is less than the full 4...

I'm not sure either, but supposedly it can be done, and doesn't require a 64 bit OS. I'm sure it's some cleverness, but they claim it can be done.

As for 64 bit PT, yeah, probably never is right.

Get Play 2, just out. The 'memory server' in Play (called ousiad) is 64-bit and can supposedly access whatever RAM you have. EW says to launch Play before Kontakt as the Kontakt memory server grabs all available RAM.

And all you Logic lovers, I'm guessing you don't have it or use it. HUGE memory problems with Logic 9.1 Hear the latest Logic user's love:
