Default ?Low latency monitoring PT HD 8 Dcommand?

Hi guys,

I have done a search and read the manual but I cant find a way.
We have a Pro Tools HD 8, windows xp with D command and Xmon.

Is there a way of recording voice overs in to protools with the Actor hearing himself in the headphones without a delay? I asumed it was easy with the Monitor section on the D command

Thanks in advance and apologies for my stupidity.

what is your routing/signal flow?
HD has very low latency under most conditions

you probably have a high latency plug-in in the chain

Itīs not a Xmon/DCommand issue as itīs an analogue only path. Your problem is certainly at PT level. It can be high latency plugins inserted in your session mixer.

Try to either bypass all plugins or disable delay comp and give it a try.

Feed the voiceover talent from an aux send inserted on the track being recorded.

The aux send physical outputs on you HD interface feed the Xmon Cue 1(or 2) and from there goes to headphone amp.

Set the aux send in PT to prefader, so that you can have a separate mix level from the one feeding the XMon.

We do it everyday with no delays.

Hi, cheers for the reply.

Currently I do have my headphone feed going out of protools through Cue 1 on the D command.

I have various waves plugins on my project template creating the delay. A problem I have is that our system is very glitchy, turning the delay comp on / off causes it to crash.

I assumed the Xmon had a way for the actor to hear himself before the signal goes through protools?
Ive had a look at the manual regarding the listen (mic) section on the D command but it is slack on details. Would this need a seperate mic for this to work?

Currently I mute the Voice Over track in protools and the actor has the hedphone on one ear.

Any thoughts on this is awesome.

Cheers

The Listen MIC is a diferent circuit that allows you to set an additional mic in the recording room or booth to hear whatīs going on. Nothing to do with your voiceover talent mic. Itīs the opposite of the Studio Loudspeaker that allow you to feed a signal to a loudspeaker in the recording room or booth, so that performers can hear anything, namely talkback, as an addition to the headphones cue mixes.

Xmon can accept any feed into itīs Cue inputs, it doesnīt need to be from PT. You can split the outs of your mic preamp so that one of the splitted signal goes straight into Xmon Cue in and the other goes to the recording track into PT. This way you donīt have any latency. The problem with this approach is that you canīt punch in at all, so itīs not a good idea at all. The best is to remove your Waves plugins from the recording session to avoid unnecessary latencies. Actually itīs not often necessary, we do it everyday, running recording sessions with Waves plugins on, but apparently your system is preventing you to do that as you mentioned PT crashing when delay comp is turned on/off. Maybe you should check if your computer is up to the task.

Another thing: are you feeding the Xmon Cue in from the main out of PT? If thatīs the case, youīre doing it wrong. That may explain the latency. You should drive your XMon Cue inputs from an Aux send placed on the recording channel in PT. No need to the talent having the headphones in one ear only. Set the track to punch in.

Hi guys, Thanks for all your input, sorry it's been so long.

My delay compensation is behaving right now and making the plugins inactive has sorted it all out.

Is there a shortcut for bypassing all plugins on a selected track? Or is it only on a row of plugins?
(I find this odd, as I feel as though the bypass all plugins on the selected track is of more use)

Thanks

Running pro tools HD 8

You should wait for Pro Tools 11 release for that reason

RTAS.
Convert to and use TDM plug-ins.

Read-up in the manual on the differences between the two and the restrictions that applies to the how, where and the order you place them on, on an HD system.
