Default Skipping CD????

Okay, this is strange. Using LE 7.3.1 cs3 , Asus P5Pvm/Pentium D/ 2gigs ram, etc....
I USED to be able to throw a cd in either of my cd drives (1. Sony dvd-rom, 2. Sony Dvd dual-layer burner) and flawlessly audition the track before importing it. Without having changed anything, the reader started skipping during this operation, so I started extracting from the writer instead. It worked for about a week, and now, same problem...playback skips (reminiscent of trying to play I-tunes thru PT hardware). You can still extract audio and it works just fine, but what would cause the playback feature to suddenly crap out like this? Looked at my dma settings and everything is right where it should be. I'm confused.....

Drives headed south? I'll grant that it's a hell of a coincidence for both to go so close together, but can you get a loaner and swap one out?
