I would go thunderbolt before anything else....however there are very few aftermarket cards out there and drivers for the PC side are really few and far between

Example Universal Audio has stated that they don't have drivers yet for PC thunderbolt

I always want to get 7 to 10 years from an interface. For that reason I wouldn't get firewire anything because USB3 outperforms it and at some point sooner than later drivers will no longer be available. I also think Thunderbolt is a transitional format that is a risky investment. While USB uses the CPU, that's no longer much of a disadvantage with today's staggering CPU power.

I would look first at something that uses high speed Ethernet like DiGiGrid, RedNet or the new MOTU AVB interfaces. That's really the future.
