Default Using PT9 without 002

Hi,

1. In general, I want to know whether I can use MIDI to record within ProTools 9 on my laptop with my PT dongle but without my 002 console. (I know I can edit without the 002.)
2. Also, the MIDI keyboard I'm considering buying has a single usb port for the MIDI. I'm not used to the newer MIDI technology- the USB as MIDI port- I'm used to a separate cablea and the pins for for MIDI In and MIDI Out. Does the USB handle BOTH of these?
3. Since it would just be MIDI i'm using for recording, does Firewire need to be used, or can I just plug it straight into my computer?
4. If I don't need the 002 in what I've described above, how do I set up the MIDI in PT's so that it recognized the keyboard.
FWIW, I do have ASIO installed on my computer.

thanks for any and all help!
Gregg

I'm thinking in your midi studio setup. Should be able to put in the keyboard name etc. and assign it.
Others will chime in.

As long as you have a working "audio engine" and a way for MIDI to be input, it should work dandy

Thank you, Dave and SpinningDisk.

Dave- not certain what an "audio engine" is. Is ASIO For All an audio engine? If not, what is a low end audio engine I can purchase?
Regarding MIDI, the keyboard has a USB MIDI and my laptop has USB ports, so it would be USB to USB.

"Audio Engine" is basically, what Pro Tools is able to use to pass audio in or out(running with no audio path to hear, would be like trying to use photo editing software without a screen). ASIO4ALL is worth a try as it will often allow you to use the onboard audio ports of most PC computers(Macs use Core Audio).

As for the USB keyboard, that should work fine as long as it is configured correctly under Setup>Midi>Midi Studio. You create a new instrument(your keyboard), select the brand and model(NOT required so leave blank if you don't find your keyboard on the list), select the midi input path(this is the critical setting). Probably something like "your keyboard"USB(Emulated). By default, instrument and midi tracks will receive ANY midi that is recognized(this is where the Midi Studio setup matters)
