Spanner is great and does a lot of really useful things. It is sooo much nicer to use than the standard panner.
But as Dan said earlier you can only send mono or 5.1 aux's from it because of the limitations of Pro Tools, which puts me off from putting it on every channel.
There's quite a big difference in sound between sending a stereo send to a reverb than a mono. Particularly for music.

There's such a lot of room for improvement in the surround panner in PT.

I just came across the surround panner in Kontakt 5.
It has a doppler function, air absorbtion (to simulate distance with filtering), a sinusoidal distance filter (like in Anymix), a built in delay for creating space. You can assign lfo's to the parameters to make subtly varying pans and levels.

All these features would be great to have on hand in the PT panner.

The point about sends is less relevant these days.
We have some great reverbs available now which accept up to 7.1 input and actually respond in a true multichannel way.
So for me, mono or 7.1 sends is a great combination.
