Default PT in OS9 classic?

First of all, yes I did a search on this. The only thing constructive I could find was this thread, which didn't really answer my question:

http://duc.digidesign.com/showflat.p...=688003&Forum=,,,,,,,,,All_Forums,,,,,,,,,&Words=classic%20mode& Searchpage=9&Limit=25&Main=688003&Search=true&wher e=sub&Name=&daterange=1&newerval=1&newertype=y&old erval=&oldertype=&bodyprev=1#Post688003

What I have: G4/400, OS 9.0.4, PT 5.something

What I want to do: Install OS X, so that I can run iTunes (just got an iPod), without "disturbing" my Pro Tools set-up

My Mac friends say that OS X will allow me to run OS 9 in Classic Mode --- just clicking on an OS 9 program will open it right up in the proper operating system. Then I heard that OS X would still be running simultaneously, making the OS 9 program (PT, in this case) slow and clunky.

Someone in the above thread says that PT won't run in Classic Mode AT ALL.

Can anyone help? And no offense, but please no "You're-going-have-to-upgrade-so-you-should-get-a-G5-right-now-and-get-rid-of-your-001-on-eBay-and-get-a-002" type stuff. I'm happy with my current PT set-up for the time being

Thanx for listening!

ps: I'm pretty sure I can still rip CD's and all that for the iPod --- would love to be able to use iTunes, though...

Hi biilly101,

Kind of confused by your request...but I'll try. First off ...is the G4/400 dual boot? If it is, that would solve all your problems. I have a feeling that it isn't. The only other alternative I can see is if you upgrade to PTLE 6.4 on OS 10 and you can still use you digi 001. Then it becomes a catch up game updating all your plug-ins and virtual instruments. The only other work around is to find a buddy that has OS10 that you can download your tunes on to your iPod. cool I forgot to mention that PTLE v.5 does not work in OS 10, (even in Classic mode)

although I never tried it...It seems I've read numerous times that ProTools will not run in classic 9 mode. (I tried a quick search but didn't see the definitive answer)

Yes, Pro Tools cannot run in OS 9 classic. You need to boot directly into OS 9 in order to run it. This is quite easy if you have a dual boot on your pre G5...1 drive for OS X.x and another for 9.x (which is what I did before I finally went to PT 6)

FWIW, AFAIK, G5s are wired to not even allow a native install of OS9, so you can't even use that as a workaround to contine using an older version of PT

Sorry!

Thank you for the informative responses. To be honest, I don't know what "dual-boot" is, or how to boot up in OS9 (as opposed to running classic). It was my understanding that to run OS9 at all --- after installing OSX --- it HAD to operate in classic mode.

Although, it looks like the suggestion to run a friend's computer to download tunes might work. There are some G5's here at work (graphic arts company) --- guess I could just do that. Was that AVGuru1? Thanx!

Go to system preferences, startup disk, and see if there's an option for OS9. You don't *have* to have the OS installs on different drives... they can be on the same drive.

I have a similar machine as you and that's what I do. I use OS9 for all things Pro Tools and then OS X for iTunes.

Alternately, you can try booting with the option key down- see if a chooser screen comes up that will let you pick which OS you want to boot into. I'm not sure if that works if the OS's are on the same drive though. But if it does, it's a nice thing, because you can leave your startup drive preference unchanged and just hold down option when you boot and pick which you want to boot in to.

So Average Joe --- I can just install OS X, and then "slip on over" to OS 9 when I want to run Pro Tools? That's great --- that's exactly what I wanted to be able to do! Anything I should be careful about when doing this?

Thanks for your help
