PT on G5
Hi all,
I'll arrive in Mac Land shortly with a spankin new G5 - no more blue screens and funny pop ups!! I was wondering whether you guys could help me out with this: If I install my Mbox on the G5 and add another non-digi interface (Firewire), will PT recognise the additional interface so i can use it as additional inputs? i'm not sure here. I know that in order for PT to run, PT hardware is required. But if I already have the Mbox, surely it should be possible to add another interface (MOTU for example) ? also, has anyone of you both Pro Tools as well as Logic installed on your G5 (not for simulatneous use though) ? For my job, i need to have both installed and I remember I used to have problems on my PC with this issue. also, have you got any other tips / suggestion regarding swap over from PC to Mac? anything and everything will be appreciated. Cheers for your help, Nad

Re: PT on G5
Hi Nad - Welcome to the Mac side! Just like you, I switched from PC about a year ago. I haven't looked back since. I am very happy with my performance. So, on to your questions...
I believe the answer to your additional inputs scenrio is "no" - and "yes" (I think). I believe that PT will recognize the midi in/outs of say an M-Audio Firwire 2496 (I had one until recently, though never tried the midi in/out with PT, so not EXACTLY sure if it works, but I think it does), but for additional analog in/outs, you are going to be limited to the MBox. At least with the Digi002 you could use the adat in for additional inputs in conjunction with a Focusrite Octopre or Presonus DigiMax... MAYBE even a MOTU 2408, but don't qoute me on that.... I know, that doesn't answer your question... sorry. Switching from PC to Mac is simple.... same rules kind of apply with some things. If you've never used a Mac before, which I imagine you have - that's usually the clincher for us former PC guys - the learning curve is minimal and you should feel fairly confident within a few days, depending how much you use it. Other than that, same rules apply to additional QUALITY ram and a dedicated audio drive. Enjoy! Eric

Re: PT on G5
Thanks Eric, in the meantime i got all the answers I needed, too -
i also got the G5 sitting in my studio now i've worked on macs before so i know my way round it, it's just that i never had to set up a mac (install software etc) before, so..but i'm fairly confident. Re installing software: I've been told that the mac "does it all automatically and by itself" cheers, Nad

Re: PT on G5
Ahhh, what a nice thing it was to bust out the my G5 when it arrived.
Macs do have their own 'BSOD' though, it's called the kernel panic. Haven't had one on the G5 so far. (knocking on wood)

Re: PT on G5
I also do 3D Animation on my Dual G5, and every once in a while Maya will give me the "spinning color wheel of death" lol.. it just keeps on spinnin and spinnin..
For Protools though its preatty hard to crash on normal conditions if you have pleanty of ram and a seperate hd to record to. I love it! I did crash Protools on purpose not to long ago just cuz I wanted to see how far it would go, lets just say I had way to many reverbs... -Kevin
