Default Change Measure 3 To Be 0:00:000?

Good Morning Everyone,

Please forgive me, I don't even know how to properly convey this question.

I have a project for school I'm starting today. The first thing I need to do is ensure that there are two measures of silence at the beginning. Easy enough, I just import all my .wav files to measure 3. The problem is, the SMPTE time at the start of the music, measure 3, needs to be 0:00:000.

What might be easier, is the instructions say:

-Create 2 measures of pre-roll by having the downbeat (beat 1 of the first full measure of music) hit *exactly* at 3/1/000
-Make the first sound hits *exactly* at 1:00:00:00

^^ I think these instructions are for Logic, which timecode starts at 1 hour (1:00:00), but we are allowed to use PT, so it would be 0:00:00. I'm just not sure how to make measure 3 be 0:00:00.

Praying to God this makes sense. Any info is appreciated!

Shaun

No, you use 1 hr in Pro Tools too.
This is standard practice in working with film because you can't have negative time.

I think that you are mis-interpreting what you want to do. The key thing I am seeing is "MAKE THE FIRST SOUND HIT EXACTLY AT 1:00:00:00

This makes total sense. I/we've worked this way in audio for visual media for decades. The "content start time" is often at 01:00:00:00, because if you need pre-roll (say, 2 seconds) that earlier time would be 00:59:58:00.

If you actually made your content start time at 00:00:00:00, and you needed those 2 seconds of pre-roll, then your session start would be 23:59:58:00. This would get messy when everyone was trying to sync content with SMPTE timecode on magnetic tape (it's a long story regarding the TV broadcast industry, but suffice it to say, 01:00:00:00 became the norm for a reason).

NOW.... what you want to do...

Go into Grid mode. (Make sure you're not in Dynamic Transport Mode) Use the Selector Tool (F7). Click on Bar 3 to set your insertion point. Go to the Setup Menu, and select "Current Timecode Position". This will allow you to type in your desired timecode at that position, and adjust the rest of the timeline accordingly. Although you can type: "01" (click) "00" (click) "00" (click) "00", the easiest thing to do is to just press your left arrow key (which will make sure you're in the leftmost field - hours) and simply type "01". You'll notice the M:S:F all read "00". Hit Enter/Return, and you're good to go.

I do this every day when I start new tracks. Even to the point where I just use a Eucon shortcut and today had to look up the correct menu for the command.

Good luck in the class!
