May work for you, did not work for me. I started using Processor Affinity a while back to solve crackling and popping after a Windows update. If I ran as admin, still got crackling and popping and PA was off, when I stopped doing that, PA was on and no crackling and popping. Could be that recent Windows updates has changed that behavior, but I'm not concerned because I've had no issues with not running as admin and now I can drag and drop to my timeline, which I couldn't do when running as admin. YMMV.

Works for me as admin. I always boot as admin.

Thanks all for chiming in on this thread. I’ll need to read up and create the necessary file to get PT to run all but cores 0 and 1. This is my full-time job and finding time to tune my system is difficult. I’ll report back as soon as I can read up about how to properly do this.

OK,
I have tried setting the affinity by making a shortcut. It seems to work, but I'm not noticing performance gains. Do I need to treat this system as 10 or 20 (hyperthreading) cores for the hex code?

The codes are revere binary counts in hex. Rewatch the video linked earlier that explains this.

You can use "start /?" to pull up turgid help on the affinity flag.

If hyperthreading is enabled the system believes there are a number of virtual cores, they are all equal, there is no say "physical core" and a "hyperthreaded core" and those cores count in the affinity calculation, in pairs sharing the same physical core. So for example removing cores 0 and 1 on a hyperthreaded systems is in reality just removing Pro Tools from the first physical core... the core handling the hardware interrupts.

D

For your system (if you use default install paths - which I always recommend) this can be achieved on Win 10 with the command line:

cmd. exe /c start "ProTools" /affinity FFFFE "C:\Program Files\Avid\Pro Tools\Protools. exe"

Note remove space before exe to use these command lines (spaces required to post in the forum). Make a shortcut on the desktop and paste the command line into the 'Target' line on the Shortcut tab.

You might also try FFFFC.

You will not see "performance gains". What you should get is less activity on the core usage meters (jumping around). This (for me) will stop pops and clicks under load at 24/96 with 64 or 128 sample buffer. At higher buffer settings (e.g. 256) I do not use the affinity switch as the system does not seem to need it.

I have always recommended people try a few different affinity settings because core usage behaviour might be a function of the interface driver and not just Pro Tools - all of my experimentation has been done with my MOTU 1248 (which I am very happy with).

Hope that helps.

PS

MODS - Can we get a sticky on standard optimizations for Win10.

I want to update you all here and say that after focusing on DPC latency testing/fixing and really tweaking windows, I have seen a substantial improvement in low latency performance. I’m working at 32 buffers and things are a lot more stable. Cpu overloads are a rarity as long as I keep things reasonable on the processing end, and I seem able to get away with quite a bit.

Process Lasso can help you make your CPU affinity settings stick. I highly recommend it.
