I can only submit opinions on the monitors I have owned. I had a pair of the first set of active monitors alesis released and i was very unhappy with the results I was geting. I eventually sold them and bought the event ps 5's....and I have had much better luck ever since.

Also add Tannoy reveal's to your list. You can get them powered or non-powered

Default Powered Monitors for under $500

I am currently in the planning/budget stages putting together an Athlon XP based Digi 001 system, and I wondering where to spend my money as far as monitors go. I probably only have about $500 available currently, so I am considering the following powered monitors:

JBL LSR25P
Alesis M1 Active Mk2
Event PS5
Yamaha MSP3
Roland DS-50A

I know that my own ears are my best judge, but since I live in a smaller town, I would have to drive a ways to listen to any of these, so a little advice would be great. For the record, I did get a chance to listen to a set of Fostex PS-3.1's, and in truth they're not bad for $200.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

i just bought a used pair of tannoy reveal actives on the duc for $475 at the urging of a few people here. i see them on ebay too. prior to that i had narrowed the search to m1, event ps line, or the reveals. trying to find used monitors if at all possible.

I agree with pk.

I won't be much help, but I just went with the M1 Actives. They sound good to me, but haven't had a chance to mix with them.

I would love to pick up a set of used powered monitors. Excellent suggestion. I will check on ebay. Any advice on how to solicit used monitors on the DUC? I'm a newbie.

Also, steals, I did mean to refer to the Yamaha MSP5's, not the 3's. Thanks.

One of the things that intrigued me about the Roland's, though, was the digital input. I have read that at least with some Roland products, this allows you to use the monitors to model various other speakers, like car radio or boom box, to get an idea of how your mix will sound there. Any thoughts on whether or not this would actually be useful (and if any products other than Roland - say PTLE - would let you take advantage of it)?

Thanks again for the replies, G.

if you search, you should find a link I posted somewhere to an article comparing monitors. The guy gave the Roland's an F, and I was told that, unless you can use the digital thing, they aren't worth it. Some don't think digitals are a good idea anyway.....

I like my M1 Actives. Don't know if the II's are better or worse, though.
