Default 2 plop

Anybody heard of this? Discovery channel has this in their spec:

".WAV file must include a 2 plop (international version of 2 pop) sync indicator (a 2 frame burst of 1K tone) at 00:59;57;06."

Their wording, their punctuation.

Anybody?

weird spec,
I usually see a 1 frame 1kHz burst 2 seconds before FFOA, e.g. at 00:59:58:00.

I'm in Europe and I've never heard of it. I keep getting pops of two frames at 00:59:58:00, but that's usually the editor's fault.

Is it not from the old film days where square 2 on the leader was the sync plop?

What frame rate? 00;59;57;06 looks familiar but I cannot quite remember where I've seen it before. Semicolons usually indicate drop frame timecode, which implies 29.97fps.

That's the NEW days. The post-1960 SMPTE universal leader counted down to 2 in seconds (view here). The old Academy leader counted down to 3 feet (here).

Yes, this is correct.

I have a show for Nat Geo that requires the same thing. They also require a pop at every second starting at 00:59:50:00, ending at 00:59:56:00, followed by the final pop at 00:59:57:06.

I also thought this was strange and is the only show I have which requires this.

This show happens to be 59.94 drop frame (HD). Don't know if that is relevant or not.

Well just because National Geographic or Discovery want it doesn't mean it's correct!! What is it for? What are they syncing this "2 plop" to?

WWWHHAAT???

They've gone bananas! Why are they syncing at 84 video frames or 67 film frames? What happens there?

Can't be because of Dolby E. Can't imagine what that could be for!

And I appreciate them calling it "international". Say what? Maybe sending them the PDF I linked to? It's from the 1960's, they should have noticed it by now...
