Default MacbookAir x Apple display x 003r

HELLO ALL!

New to the thread but have a problem.. i have a MacbookAir mid 2013, with yosemite 10.10.3 going to dual apple monitors via thunderbolt, then have a 800 to 400 cable from my monitors to the 003r.. the firewire light never comes on and the family driver says an 00 family device has never been connected to this computer.. ive tried restarting and installing all the latest drivers.. is there something im doing wrong? is it not going to work with the firewire 800 to 400??

thanks !!

air to monitors via thunderbolt
monitors to rack via 800 to 400 cable

Is the 003 known to work with any other computer? Fried Firewire interfaces is a common failure mode. You *cannot* hot plug these interfaces.

FW 800 to 400 adapter cables are also surprisingly unreliable. The most reliable adapter I have found is this Sonnet adapter http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fw_adapter.html

Is the adapter cable you are using known to work elsewhere... preferably with the same 003r?

I would also try the FW ports on both monitors and try removing both monitors and using a stand alone Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter.

Driving two monitors off an Air may not give you a great Pro Tools experience, the Air a bit underpowered to start with.

Hopefully you know Pro Tools 10 is not officially supported on Yosemite and will have problems with the GUI.

What exact driver version are you using?

Indeed^^^, then, consider, maybe you are dragging the TB bus to its knees? Start simple by testing the 003 without the TB displays. Once that works, move on to testing with 1 TB display, then both.

I am running a 002 Console with a mid-2012 Mackbook Pro connected via Thunderbolt to an Apple display. The 002 is connected to the Apple display via FW800 -> FW400 adapter (I bought mine from Apple). Zero issues here. Pro Tools 12, OSX 10.8.5.

I don't know for sure, but would venture a guess that the TB bus has more than enough throughput to run dual Apple displays with various FW/USB interfaces plugged in...Never done it before, tho, so just a hunch. Regardless, I would follow Dave's suggested methodology for testing the 003.
