How to automate a plug in bypass?

I have a guitar solo, and for one short section of that solo I want to insert the TL auto pan. I thought I could enable Plug in automation and have the effect bypassed except for the time I enable it, but that doesn't seem to automate the bypass/enable. Is there another way to do this?

It may be worth a review of the user guide on automation, or visit to youtube(where you can find hundreds of tutorial videos). As an option, just highlight the part(region) where you want the effect, move that to its own track and insert the desired plugin(although, I have never had an issue automating any plugin's bypass function)
