Default 32 Bit Float

Hi all

I am sure the 32 bit float workflow is the bane of many of our work lives.

I am working with a director that is shooting in loud environments, as an example ships, prop planes and diesel vehicles.

He insists that he has better luck recording in 32bit float, which I get given the headroom.

That having been said, they are editing in Premier Pro and can only export AAF in 24bit. So, it does not work well for me in PT.

Any suggestions?

I am on the latest PT HD running on an Apple M1 Max. 32 Gigs Ram. Interface is a simple 2 channel Scarlett as these series are only broadcast stereo.

Cheers
JT

There have been many discussions on the DUC regarding 32bit workflow. Unless you plan on importing the audio from the original 32bit sound rolls from production, your 32bit workflow will be broken at the point when the editor imported the audio and sent you the AAF/OMF to mix. You will be working with 24/48 files most likely.

We also already covered this in your other thread here a month ago.

You'd have to use Ediload or Kraken, some external tool to assemble from an EDL and the original files.

Not hard but not a quick and easy built-in solution either. I guess the main question is are you missing some benefit of 32 bit float? Or is everything coming over from Premier OK and you don't need the original files? For me it would depend on the complexity of the show and most importantly the budget/deadline.

An EdiLoad assembly doesn't take long at all to do if the required metadata is in tact, now that version 5 can export a PTX file with all clips ready for editing. I would however recommend requesting a XML file from your editor as the EDLs exported from Premiere Pro are quite limited.

Regards,

Mark

Just adding a few thoughts as others have given you the answer...

32 bit float does not change the relationship of the recorded voice source vs recorded noise source. NR still has to work on that level. Just another example of someone not understanding audio and handing it to you.

If you want 32b files, EdiLoad v5 is the way to go. And, in fact, the new V5 is now wicked powerful and easy to use (once you learn it). Sessions made with EL V5 are really slickly assembled so you can get working quickly. I just did a decent budget feature with Deva files made by a person who setup all the metadata correctly and it all came together nicely.

The side note is, they are shooting a television series on hot rods. They are recording at 32 bit float in an effort to avoid overloading the recorder input. The issue is, the wireless has a built in limiter that cannot be disabled. That overloads, so a moot point in the end.
