What is it that you are trying to achieve by linking them?

The only way it MIGHT work would be lightpipe out of the 002 controller to the lightpipe input of the 003. Sadly, that would render the entire 002 control surface useless, and there are plenty of other options for getting more inputs(any of a dozen or so 8 channel mic preamps with lightpipe, feeding the lightpipe input of the 002 would get you 16 inputs with a working control surface). I have a Presonus D8 for sale that would be a great option(apologies for the shameless plug)

interesting. well can you like two 002 devices together? i basically want to have 8 xlr jacks with v48 phantom power and be able to record with all of them simultaneously. You know to get all the tracks separate in mixing. so basically could i get a 002 rack and link the rack to the 002 surface and be able to use that board fully?

The expansion device can be just about anything with an adat connection and will work standalone. You could buy a focusrite, behringer or whatever you like. There are many options for the expansion of an 002 that don't need to be another Avid/Digidesign interface.

So yes, an octane will work.

Just plug something into it, and make sure you set Clock Source in Hardware Preferences to Optical.

It ALMOST that simple. You may need to go to Setup>IO>Input tab and add the paths(or click the DEFAULT button). Learning how to customize the IO section can make for a nicer work flow. For instance, my inputs are labeled according to the preamp(I have several). on your setup, the 8 inputs from the lightpipe unit will be named(by default) Adat 1, Adat 2, etc. Now if the unit is a Presonus(just an example) you can rename the inputs to Presonus 1, Presonus 2, etc(to make things a bit more logical). Or if you have a small setup and like to leave everything patched all the time, you could label the inputs according the source, like Vocal Mic 1, Motif L, Motif R, etc. Have fun with it and when you find an arrangement you like, choose Export Settings to save your configuration. If you ever need to recover, you can then Import Settings.
