Default off topic: Neve 1081R versus SSL XL Superpre

I'm looking for good pre-amps to record drums.
Lately I saw two units that just might handle it:
Neve 1081R and SSL XL Superpre.
Both can be used standalone,I would like to hear some opinions about both of them...
Oh,and does anyone know the price of the SSL unit by any chance?

Thanx!

The Universal Audio 2-610 is a killer mike preamp. you plug a mike into it and things sounds great. Most other mike amps make you use eq to get make your sounds come alive. This box sounds great without eq. I believe it is the biggest selling external mike pre.. The basic design has been in use for 40 years

I'm sorry,but I think I didn't mention anything
about Universal Audio.
I'll take your word for it,but my topic is about SSL XL versus Neve 1081R pre-amps.
So does anyone have some relevant opinions regarding these two?

I don't know about the SSL pre and I've not used the new reissued 1081R, but I almost always record drums using 1081's and 1073's. (Sorry, I know you didn't mention the 1073's but I use both modules. I usually use Neve 1073's on kick, snare, hi hat, overheads and room, and THEN I use 1081's on toms for the extra eq band.)

This is probably no help to you, as you've probably used the original 1081's and 1073's, but thought I'd throw this in.

I'm sure that pre-amps of a seven-hundred-and-fifty-thousand dollar console will just sound fine.
I was just asking about the differences between them, not if they are affordable;that's my problem

So thank you rtcstudio for your review!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">The 1081R are just micpre's no EQ's.

The 1081 AMS/Neve reissue has the EQ on it.

There is a difference in price for both.

For what it's worth, I've always stuck with Neve stuff and it hasn't hurt me once. There's nothing I've ever heard that has beaten a top of the line Neve piece of gear (vintage, reissue, or brand new like the 88R console).

The AMS/Neve 1081 and 1081R units are nothing short of amazing, but, they are expensive. If you've got the cash, go for the Neve. You won't regret it.
