Default Waves Update Plan - WUP - What’s the point?

I understand WUP is meant for those who have bundles, where a new version of the bundle might include a new plugin, and so the WUP covers the new plugin.

But what’s the point for individual plugins ? I have three or so waves plugins who’s WUP expired in 2015 .. should I be worried about updating the WUP for them?

Their version number is cited as 9.2.0, the same as the plugins I have with a current WUP.

Please help me fill in the gaps .. I feel like I’m missing something.

Updates for operating system compatibility/DAW changes. What the “U” stands for. You don’t get new versions otherwise. Waves was doing what ProTools is doing now years before. Except now their “reinstatement fee” is non-existent so people jump back on only when they need an update.

Thanks for the explanation! The only thing that still can't understand is this:

Current waves version is 9.92

OP is not getting updates on plugins when their WUP expired. Sometimes you end up with two Waves Shells in you plugin directory in these situations. The Waves Shell is like a bridge to the actual Waves plugins which (on a Mac) live in the Applications/Waves directory. Every now and then you couldn’t update even things that were on the WUP because it was incompatible with having more than one shell so, if updated for the plugins on WUP, the plugins not on the WUP would stop working. That’s a case where having everything on WUP solved issues. And eventually there’ll be a v10 when people will have to make a decision again to be on WUP. With the recent Apple announcement of making their own chips for future computers, I can imagine this would be a major overhaul for Waves and a v10.

Not all plugins need fixing for all version changes of ProTools or operating systems. Change notes here:

Side note, since there is no penalty for jumping back on WUP, there is a max amount for WUP (it used to be not limited but now you can reach a price limit so all plugins after that are part of the same max price), and dealers can discount WUP pricing too (you get a code) and sometimes Waves offers discounts for WUP, I usually let it expire.

And then when something is needed, I see if Waves has discount pricing on WUP or call my audio equipment dealer and get a discounted cost for renewal and jump back on. Then covered for a year again.

Thanks again BScout! but I still don't understand why all my plugins say 9.92 in Waves Central even when some of of them have been out of WUP since before the last version came out. Not that I'm too worried as all of them work fine but I'm suspecting that I'm not looking a the actual version number of the plugs I have.

Thanks for the reply everyone - after doing a little more research I noticed I was getting confused between the installer version number (9.2.0) and the actual software/Plugin version number.

Upon more investigation - all my waves plugins, including those with inactive WUP (the oldest having expired in 2015) have exactly the same version numbers: '9.92.045 Build 130659' .. Which brings me back to my main point - if all these plugins with inactive WUP are being updated on-the-reg, whats the point ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

* Here's some screen-cap of the above version numbers from a plugin with the oldest out-of-date WUP, and one with a current WUP - for those who are dubious.

Seems they've changed policies. It's only needed for major updates (so v10 next) or added plugins to a bundle. Incremental updates are included even if WUP is expired (as long as you had the major version during your WUP period)

Thanks for digging that out .. so I don't need to worry about WUP until v10.0

Amazing.
