IIRC, HD Accel will give you 192 audio tracks, HD will give you 128 tracks.

HD has always been based on number of "voices" which is entirely hardware dependent. Doesn't matter what version you have, an HD1 card will always have a max of 96 voices.

Well the blurb on the front page of the product guide says
"Create more complex mixes with double the internal busses (256) and total audio tracks (512) " I'm aware of the limitations of the TDM card, but I thought the whole point of running Tools native was to sidestep this. If I run Reaper I get unlimited tracks through the full I/O of my TDM card. So how many tracks will I get if I remove the core card and put my Hammerfall in instead ?

192 voices. Which in practice means 192 mono tracks, or 96 stereo, or somewhere in between, if you use a combination of mono and stereo (as long as you have bought the toolkit).
FWIW when I bought PT9 I also didn't really understand this voices/tracks palaver. I was also used to having virtually unlimited tracks and proper ADC, but time taught me that this is not the Pro Tools way.  D
