Default converter help

I was about to purchase the Rosetta until I saw a few other converters that might do the job just as well for less.
Any comments on RME, Lucid or others whould be helpful

Quaz,

I have the RME... I have been very happy with the unit. Works well and sounds great. Also it is an 8 channel AD-DA converter whereas the Rosetta is only 2 channel. The RME is in the $1100 zone and is probably a better deal across the board.

(I will add that I was never able to a-b the RME against a Rosetta.)

Thanks Bugsy.

I wasn't sure of the price .
It's starting to look like it's the way to go--8 channels too!
Was there a noticable difference in sound compaired to the 001.

get the lucid ad2496! period. only $750. look at it this way. the rme 8ch. is $1100, which works out roughly to be about $70 a channel (remember, it has d/a as well as a/d, so that'd be 16 channels for the purpose of this example). the lucid is $375 a channel, and sounds better than the rosetta, at almost $500 a channel. between the lucid & the rme, which one do you think is gonna sound better? i rest my case. but forget the numbers. professionaql engineers use the lucid, & for the moct part, don't use the rme. what does that say to you, & how important is the quality of your converters to you?

paying more doesnt always mean its better. evaluate whut you need. if you need more then 2 channels of solid converters then rme is the answer. if all you need is 2 channels lucid would be my choice. but theres a couple of lucid units. one is ad and one is da and theres one thats ad/da so do your homework... peace.

Who makes the RME?, or where can you get them. I am a little confused, cuz I thought apogee made the rme.

Quaz- Yes there was noticable difference. The RME clearly sounded better. I tested the RME against the 001 using a single channel of recorded guitar. Also, the effects of better quality converters will be mulitplied by the number of trax in your recording. Ultimately the better converters will help to add the element of dimension to your mixes. And help to allow every instrument to sit in it's own space.

I have not had the chance to compare RME against Apogee, Lucid, Mytek, etc... I would suspect all of these companies make converters superior to one the ones that come in the 001. Regardless, the RME sounds good! Also, a very big consideration is that the ADI 8 Pro is 8 channels of ad-da. Hard to beat that... BTW... I have the the RME with the Nuendo face plate. Same unit, just different logo.

Fuzz- The RME ADI-8 Pro is made by RME. Check out: http://www.rme-audio.com/english/index.htm

Hey bugsy, thanks! I checked out there site, and learned that there was a an ADI 8 DS, but from what I read it does not look like it would be compatible to the 001, b/c of the need for 2 light pipes, for (DS) double the speed. Am I correct on that. If I am that leaves the ADI 8 pro. Now where can I purchase one of these? Do I have to go through RME, or is there anywhere that has a better price or what?

Sorry for bugging you bugsy, but I just did some further investigation, and found a dealer. Still would like to know who had the best price though.

If it's quantity and value you need, try the Alesis AI-3 for around $350. It's got 8 balanced ins and outs, 24-bit 48/44.1kHz converters, same as current ADAT decks, ADAT lightpipe interface, one rack space.

If those prices are right, you could get a Lucid AD2496 and an AI-3 for the same price as the RME, use them both at once on a 001 for 18 tracks in, 16 out. Personally I'd prefer 2 killer a/d's and 8 decent ones rather than just 8 good a/d's.
