Default Restore from Time Machine okay for Pro Tools?

I have a MBP coming and I am planning to swap out the 5400 RPM for an SSD in the next few months but I don't like the thought of having to install everything for a new hard drive, (so much software and plugs). Does anyone have an idea if I backed up this hard drive to time machine and then later when I get the new SSD I could restore from Time Machine? (I know it's possible, just checking to see if Pro Tools works well with this in people's experience).

Check out Carbon Copy Cloner ... run current HD to the SSD replacement and pop it right in.

Thanks. Looks like this is very similar to Time Machine but I'm guessing your saying that this does a better job then Time Machine for the purpose of Pro Tools?

Yes, CCC is definitely better than Time Machine for Pro Tools.

Thanks. I guess I'll use Carbon Copy Cloner to be on the safe side.

Time Machine works perfect, there's no reason not to use it.

Time machine works perfectly until it does not. How many thousands of times have you tested this? On what Macs? OS X versions? CCC is a great tool specifically designed for cloning disks.

You can use something like the Voyager drive dock (http://www.newertech.com/products/voyagerq.php - I have the previous version Voyager and have had no problems on Macs or PCs with USB2 or FW800) to directly connect the new drive to your Mac. Then use CCC to clone the old drive and then test boot the new drive while in the Voyager dock before finally using it to replace the original drive (then put that original drive somewhere safe as a backup - and although it s not a pretty as a dedicated housing you can use the Voyager dock as a place to update this backup drive).

The reason I suggest Carbon Copy Cloner is cause it's free to use and it's one simple step. Run CCC, swap out drive. No thinking required.

And yeah, you're going to need some sort of USB or FW deal to connect the drive to the machine. Buy the one that fits both and you can run CCC after you're happy with everything to backup the SSD. If the SSD ever fails, you can boot from USB and NOT cancel sessions. Order a new drive and reverse the process.

This just seems a simpler solution for the whole situation rather than having to deal with Time Machine. While it may work, CCC requires way less thinking and faster recovery.

Just my opinion ... love OS X so much I'm even running it on my PC.
