Default Re: Apogee introduces new Ensemble Thunderbolt

I just got one of these today and am putting it through its paces (in my world that is measuring RTL and performance at 96kHz with lowest buffers).

It really is 1.1ms at 96kHz/32buffer in Logic. Actually runs decent there with 3 tracks in record (will test more later). At 64 buffer in Logic it comes in at 1.8ms - same as HDN at 96k/64. But when I switch over to ProTools at 96kHz/64buffer I get 2.44ms latency. I tested it with a new session and one track - no plugins - still the same.

All I can figure is that AVID has made the lowest path in and out of Pro Tools less efficient for 3rd parties than it gets with its own TB box. Surprising - and somewhat depressing for a low latency freak like myself...

-------------------- update 9/21/16
THE reason that I got the 2.44ms value is because I had the box checked in Playback engine setup for "Ignore errors during PB and Record". This adds a safety buffer in PT. Take it out and RTL is 1.78ms for 96kHz 64 buffer and Apogee Ensemble. This is very close but not exactly the AVID Omni value since the A/D D.A times for Ensemble and Omni are slightly different. At 44.1kHz the Ensemble is significantly faster A/D D/A than the Omni - hence RTL is markedly lower.

Hey!

What kind of Mac do you use with your Ensemble TB? What else do you sync to its clock? Curious!

I just did a test at 44.1KHz of Ensemble Thunderbolt vs HD Native / HD Omni:

HD Omni:

32: 148 (3.35ms)
64: 212 (4.8ms)

Apogee Ensemble Thunderbolt:

32: 126 (2.86ms)
64: 190 (4.3ms)

(corrected after propower's post below)

I don't agree with your measurements for the Ensemble - but the OMNI look like I remember. I also discovered a flaw in the original test I did that I corrected in other threads but not here. One must be careful NOT to check the PT box in Playback Engine Setup that says "Ignore Errors During PB and Record" - this adds extra RTL. (see my post edit above - Apogee TB is faster than OMNI at 44.1kHz, at 96kHz they are about the same)...

When this (and all boxes in Setup - Playback Engine are unchecked) with Apogee Ensemble Thunderbolt you get:

96kHz 64 buffer RTL = 1.78ms
44.1kHz 32 Buffer RTL = 2.87ms

In Logic ProX you get exactly the same but you also get a useable 1.1ms at 96kHz 32 buffer with some restrictions on plugins...

That was enabled on my friend's system where I did the measurement.
I will redo the test. Thanks!

@propower I corrected the values!
Amazing, Apogee Ensemble Thunderbolt has actually lower latency than HD Native.
