Pro Tools 8 LE on new Macbook Pro
I have an MBox and Protools 8 or 8.1 LE. I was running it on an iMac with no issues upwards of a year ago. I am thinking about buying a high-end MacBook Pro (15 inch, GPU), will this version run on the latest version of OSX?
The hard drive on this particular unit seems extremely fast so I don't think there are any hardware issues... |

Re: Pro Tools 8 LE on new Macbook Pro
You will not be able to run 8 on the new ones because of the operating system.
You will actually need to upgrade to 12. |

What about the instrument pack? I have an iLok, etc. The upgrade seems to be about $199.

Re: Pro Tools 8 LE on new Macbook Pro
Also, what about the MBox itself? Does Version 12 still support this hardware?

Re: Pro Tools 8 LE on new Macbook Pro
If its the original light blue Mbox with the Focusrite preamps, its not going to work at all. Mbox 2....I'm not sure

so great graphic engine and get either the standard 2,5GHz model (which works perfectly with PT) or, if you have enough money, the most powerful custom 2,8GHz model, preferably with the 1TB Flash drive. Both are proven to work simply great with the latest versions of Pro Tools and Mac OS X. There we reach another important subject . Pro Tools LE8 definitely will not work with the OS X those MBPs will be delivered anymore and you cannot use any Mac with any Mac OS X prior to the one this particular Mac was delivered with. Means, unfortunately no chance to run LE8 on any recent Mac successfully. However, because you live in the US, there still is an offer for a PT LE-to-PT12 upgrade available for US customers only. For only $199.- you can use the hardware serial number of your MBox to take advantage of this upgrade which ends with 31st of Dec 2015. After that period there are no upgrades available anymore, only the full and pretty expensive version of Pro Tools. So this definitely is the right time to upgrade your Pro Tools. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/daw-s...s%20LE&index=1 With this upgrade you will receive PT10, 11 and 12 (all separate installers, so it´s up to you only which to use) and 1 year of updates and support. After that year you still will be able to use your PT without any limitations however if you will want to receive further updates, you will have to pay another fee. If you will not need further updates you will be able to use your PT further on anyway. Finally unfortunately even your MBox will be legacy for the use with the latest versions of PT and Mac OS X. There were no drivers available for the series 2 interfaces for Mavericks and Yosemite anymore. Needless to say it will not work with the new OS X El Capitan (the OS X your new MacBook will come with). http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=361983 The good news is that today there are very affordable yet very decent quality interfaces (even better than the MBox) available for around $200.- which do work flawlessly with PT11/12 and those recent MacBooks. These are usual replacements for MBox users and offer even better audio quality. Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-a...%202i2&index=2 http://global.focusrite.com/usb-audi...s/scarlett-2i2 Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-a...udio-interface http://global.focusrite.com/usb-audi...s/scarlett-2i4 Focusrite 6i6 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-a...udio-interface http://global.focusrite.com/usb-audi...s/scarlett-6i6 I have used the 2i2 myself this summer and it did work great with PT12 and the 2,5GHz MBP model. Of course this will be a certain amount of money which will be necessary to get a recent, usable Pro Tools system but you would get a very cool, modern recording system for years again. Btw as you have mentioned already those new Apple Flash drives are that fast that you theoretically may skip any external drive for your Pro Tools session incl. audio files. You only need to check out to get enough storage space for all your stuff=a large enough Flash drive because you must not fill up a SSD/Flash drive more than 80% of it´s available storage space. Otherwise it will slow down and die early. Means, if you have lots of data you will have to get the 1TB Flash drive. If you have not too much data you will be fine with original 512GB Flash drive. Not to forget, you will need such a one as well to house the licenses for the recent versions of Pro Tools. There are no authorization codes used anymore but iLok licenses instead. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/acces...earchTerm=ilok Hope this will be all the info you will need, whatever you decide to do finally. The best of success to you! |
