It looks like they are gonna release something like a studio version (controller only) of their S3L soon. How soon? NAB/AES?

It depends a bit on when do you need it.

Personnally I would definitely consider a good deal on a used one. It's a great controller with deep integration.

At the price they're asking for new...

So, the time has come. I started this thread almost a year ago and the S3 has finally appeared. But the decision isn't as easy as I'd hoped. Lots of pros and cons to the S3. I still find myself wanting a C24, but I'm afraid that it will be abandoned sometime soon. Anyone else in the same boat? Trying to decide between the S3 and C24...

Default To C24 or not to C24

C24 isn't EuCon. Avid has made it clear that EuCon is the protocol for the future. Not sure if that sways you or not.

Depends on price. I would consider used C24 in excellent condition at a price that makes it possible to pay for ifself relatively fast.

I can get one for 5K. I'm not as concerned about Eucon as I am about the length of life the C24 has left at Avid. The studio set up, desk purchase, etc. is not something that I want to have to deal with every few years. I had a Control 24 in working order for all of about 2-3 years. Granted, I bought a used one after the C24 had come out, but it sucks to have to do this all over again!

Afaik the issue with procontrol and control 24 protocols was to do with the migration from a 32bit to 64bit codebase. Given we are unlikely to go to a 128bit cpu and os architecture any time soon, I would have thought currently working systems like icon and c24 should be good well beyond their supported 5 years from end of life. Given c24 is still for sale that gives you at least 5 years of paying for itself. Id take a c24 with surround monitoring and plugin mapping over a eucon brand new s3. 2c

I registered just to chime in on this older thread. I would say if you can find a good deal on the C24, go for it. You have 16 usable pres, monitor section, and of course the visual aspect really makes your workspace feel like a recording studio in the traditional sense (fader automation, knobs, metering, etc).

Part of the recording studio experience for clients is feeling like you're in an a "next level" environment. The C24 gives you this with a sleeker profile than the Control 24.

As for support, it seems the Control was supported at least 5 years after it was discontinued (through Protools 10). The C24 is still on the market so I would imagine it would warrant at least the same.
