Default Music minus Vocals

Hey guys,

Looking for some software,(or hardware), that takes vocals off existing tracks. After searching on google, I thought I'd post to check out y'all for some advice.

Recently I remember reading in EM or Tapeop of a new product, but I can't find it. Any help would be cool.

I am def more of a musician than an engineer, so if anyone has any tips on how to do this, I am all ears.

Best,

Kenny

Hi Kenny,

There was a thread about this a few weeks ago. What you need to do is to 'cancel' the vocal by putting one channel 180 degrees out of phase. This invloves seprating the channels, then putting in a plug-in and clicking the phase button on one of them. The vocal will cancel, while the instruments on left and right will be realtively unaffected. There's obviously more to it than just that. I've heard the effect, and it leaves a 'hole' in the middle. I think you might run the risk of losing some drums - which are ususally in the middle too - but presumably you could use EQ-ing to seperate out the vocal a bit first. I guess that finally leaves the two channels out of phase, so maybe you then do a similar operation to put what's left back in phase. Do a search. It's there.

Alesis Vocal zapper is the hardware you are looking for. I jave had 100% success with a simple phase inversion of the left track and pan both tracks to the center.

I do music sometimes for Figure Skaters who need music without vocals for their solos.

Thanks guys.. let me experiment.

Karel, I was thinking of you yesterday as I was reading the latest issue of Tapeop. It has an interesting article.."Phil Taylor & The Astoria". It is about his floating studio along the banks of The Thames, just southwest of London.

g'day.

Kenny

Now there's a niche market...

Alesis Vocal zapper eh? If someone could turn that into a plug-in they'd make a fortune!

Kenny, tapeop's a magazine right? (not online?) I'll try to find it. We may well be floating past it on Tuesday, in which case I'll post a pic. But then maybe he's further up river than we're going. Does it say exactly where he is? (Like Teddington or Shepperton etc.)
