Default Line 6 and 002 Won\'t Connect Via MIDI

I have a Digi002 rack, ProTools 6.4 on Mac OS X (iBook G4).

I have a keyboard and a drum machine that work perfectly well via midi in my setup. I route the signal to a Roland XV-3080 synth. I'm usually happy.

I cannot for the life of me make my Line 6 Pod or Line 6 Flextone III send MIDI to ProTools. I have tried directly into the 002's midi in. I have tried the m-audio uno to the iBook's USB. Nothing makes the 002 receive MIDI from the guitar amps.

I have tried looking at Audio Midi Setup. Even when I plug the m-audio interface in, it only shows it to me as a 1x1 Interface and will not let me create a connection to the 002's midi in.

Anybody have a solution on this one? It's driving me nuts and killing my playing time.

Thanks!

What data (MIDI) are you trying to output from the line 6? Volume changes? Patch changes? There's not that much MIDI data a Line 6 amp can send. How are you trying to record it in Pro Tools?

I'm trying to record it as notes/ticks so I can later route it through one of my synth units and choose my sounds (if I want to change them/add more audio tracks, etc.). That's how I've been using the keyboard and drum machines.

At this point, the midi track in ProTools, when record-enabled, gets no input at all from the Line 6 and there is no signal being passed to the synth.

You are mistaken and confused about the functionality of MIDI from your Line 6 amp. It does not convert your guitar notes to MIDI. You need a guitar synthesizer for that.

You should read the manual for your Flextone. It should cover what MIDI data is output from the amp. It is definitely not MIDI notes.

Unfortunately, the Flextone manual pretty cryptic on MIDI. It looks like you're right. Bummer.

Thanks.

If you want to send midi data from your guitar the only option is to install a midi pickup like this one http://www.zzounds.com/item--ROLGKKITGT3. And since there are no midi pickups i know of that fit into standard single coild or humbucker slots you are going to have to do a little body routing for the wiring(normally they fit right on top of the bridge so you will either run it across you guitar into another pickup slot or drill a new hole) plus you have to route the body for the extra electronics and the midi jack. so all in all its pricy. you are better off using protools piano roll. or if you dont plan on using anything to far from the guitar sound then just record a clean track and try and get the sound you want from effects(you can normally get some synth and pad sounds out if you try hard enough)
