I'm 64, and on the first couple of sessions I did, my drum kit was mic'd with only a single overhead...a little later they did put a mic on my bass drum...

I could do 2 but like 3 as a minimum. Two well placed overheads and a kick mic and that's all I need. Fwiw I'm 32, but been playing in bands for about half my life. Anyways I always appreciate the kiss methodology.

Say I have a bunch of vocal stacks with an aux send of delay and reverb. Can I print all the stacks to one stereo file to save on process power? I have a very old macbook and don't have the money for a better computer right now

Absolutely. That's basically how early "multi-tracking" worked. You had to keep "bouncing" as you recorded new tracks.

In 1977 when I was 12, I hooked a walkie talkie to my old Gibson Colorado guitar and taped the mic open. Then I turned on dad's radio and my other walkie talkie so I had (so I thought) stereo! I had real feedback! And I recorded to two cassette decks, ping ponged back and forth till I had a complete, if poor quality, tune. It was a magical time that I have experienced 4 times throughout life as a recording person. The next time was my first 4 track recorder, the time after that was my first album in 1990 when we had THIRTY TWO tracks of digital on a Mitsubishi machine, and the final time was my first ProTools (nine) rig. I love having the ability to sound the way I want to right here at home.

I've actually used this technique to record the drum of a Harmony band a few years back, not with the same mics though. Since it was a live concert I used a Cardioid for the overhead (to try and tame the side bleed from the other instruments), and a d112 for the kick. Was pretty good, but I still prefer to have many mics on drums

Unfortunatly they arn't professional players, and it was in a pretty big catholic church so the reverb was pretty overwhelming, not to mention that the conductors (there was two harmony that day) kept changing groups in between songs, and they weren't sitting where they were supposed although I had already talked to them before hand.

I have read that the Crown PZM boundary mic is good for drums, also a single CAD M179 overhead pointed at the snare/bass drum.
Never tried these myself as i dont record live drums

Best kept secret for live drums is using Neumann 105 live vocal mics without windshields just like you would use Neumann 184's in studio :)

You talking about as using them as individual drum mics or overheads? And how durable are they when whacked by a drum stick?
