controller or console? What are you using & why

Just interested if your using a controller (ie control 24) or console ( ie tascam dm4800) and why?

My response isn't fair, but you asked! We bought an SSL console that is also a controller, but I rarely use it as a controller. SSL's automation so blows away anything that can be done on ProTools, and it still feels 'human'. That's important to me as I use automation as a tool to remember MY MOVES, not to tweak it to death 1/2dB at a time. I learn the tune and the mix then print automation on the last couple of passes. If it doesn't feel right, I run it again as a whole until I like my mix 'performance'. It's a feel thing.

We also rarely use plug-ins because the SSL is a $500k plugin, IMHO. I'm using ProTools in this setup as nothing more than a 'tape recorder'.

Now, of course, not everyone on this list is going to be able to spend that kind of money on a console, but you need to decide FIRST how you want to work and then go from there.
